Sooo guess what came in the mail for me!!
Tumblr media
It’s really good and I wanna ramble about some of my favourite things in the comic so THIS IS YOUR SPOILER WARNING!!
OK SO:
-First, this is probably my favourite of all the TDP comics that have been put out, TTM was chock full of Rayllum and I loved every second of it, and I loved learning about Rayla, and Claudia and Soren’s pasts in their respective comics, but I have been dying to learn more about Callum and Ez’s past for a long time, and this comic delivered plenty of what I was hoping for, I think the only thing I’m kind of disappointed about was we didn’t learn much about Sarai or about Callum’s bio dad, but that’s alright, that’s more of a gripe of mine than anything.
-The story starts off with Callum and Ezran coming back from the incident with the waterfall and the raccoons that Callum mentions during 1x09, nice continuity nod!
-There’s a part where Ezran is struggling to explain to Harrow how he can talk to animals and Harrow just gently tells Ez to slow down to let the words come to him, Harrow is such a good dad!
-Callum makes this face when the boys discover a library:
Tumblr media
I love that nerd so much! (All I could hear when I read this line was “I’d like to spend my vacation at the LIBRARY!”)
-There’s a handful of moments where Callum quotes Sarai, little tidbits of advice she gave to him.
-There’s a great moment where Ezran goes around talking to several kids and offers them comfort and sends them to the town hall for safety and Callum is completely blown away and tells Ez that he was amazing and he sounded just like Harrow in that moment.
-There’s another great moment where Ezran wants to go check on the kids in the town hall while Callum reads about the dream warden and of course Callum doesn’t want Ez to go alone and we get some genuine vulnerability from Callum when he admits that he promised to keep Ezran safe for Harrow and that he thinks if he succeeds then Harrow will be proud of him, and that he feels like he keeps failing at keeping that promise, poor guy doesn’t realize that Harrow already is proud of him!
-Easily the best moment is when Ezran talks the dream warden down, the the story of the dream explains that the creature had a young elf friend, but eventually he lost his friend started giving people nightmares as a result, now during most of the comic there’s a lot of times where Callum is irritable towards Ezran, he scoffs at a lot of Ez’s suggestions, he mocks Ezran’s ‘weird animal thing’, and there’s a part where he’s trying convince Harrow to let him come with them to the east side of the village, and is annoyed when Harrow permits him to come on the condition that he keeps an eye on Ezran, and when Ez talks to the dream warden he says that creature reminds him of his brother, that Callum makes him laugh and draws imaginary animals for him, but around the same time every year, around the time when Sarai passed, Callum becomes angry, but that Ezran still loves Callum and refuses to give up on Callum, I love this message so much, also Ezran is truly wise beyond his years, he’s like somewhere between four and six in this story and he shows this level understanding and patience towards Callum dealing with grief and missing Sarai, that’s incredible!
-Later Callum tells Ez that he has a gift for talking and that Sarai would be proud of him, and Ez tells Callum that she would be proud of him too, I love these boys so much!!
-JERK FACE DANCE ORIGIN REVEAL HELL YEAH!
I loved the comic so much, I loved looking into Callum and Ez’s past, I loved the angst, I loved the message, I loved all of Ez’s animal sidekicks, I had such a good time reading it! This is just making me more hyped for season 7! Idk if they’re gonna put out another comic, but if this the last TDP comic then I’d say they ended on a high note.

The Tarry Gift || Higgs Monaghan x Reader (yet Sam makes a short guest apperance too!)
Tumblr media
Summary: it had to be a simple delivery after a longer time of being indisposed. Little did you know that the client was Higgs Monaghan himself
Warnings: none
Words: 2728
Authors: Cass & Bear
A/N: This is a comedy fic. We wrote it accidentally while just playing around with writing a thing for Higgs Monaghan character but it came out so laughably that we decided to share it with you! ENJOY!
Tumblr media
You hoped for a lot as for the first delivery since a long time but instead, you’d gotten pizza delivery. A fucking pizza.
You took the box and headed to the destination.
When the terminal beeped, Higgs narrowed his eyes. Quickly a realization came - it could be nothing but pizza!
Oh, how much he hoped to finally meet Sam in his bunker!
How much he craved to see Sam's face when he will realise that Peter Englert was no one else but Higgs himself!
Before putting his hood on, he checked his makeup and smiled at his reflection in a mirror. "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the meanest of them all?," He smirked widely to his reflection so the whiteness of his teeth glistened back in a light of lamp and Higgs chuckled.
He checked his outfit for the very last time and walked to open the door.
"Oh, Sam Bridges! Guess you're happy to..... Who the fuck are you?"
"Who the fuck are you?," You asked with a frown, still holding pizza box in your hands.
The last thing you needed now was being insulted by an aspiring beauty guru. "I have your pizza, mr Englert."
"Where's Sam Bridges?," He asked, measuring your features from the bottom to the top.
You shrugged. "He left before I did. Even if he is my friend I don't really know where he is. Why do you ask?"
"Nevermind. Oh, where are my manners? Please, come in, come in," he gestured at you to get inside the bunker.
"Uhm…," You felt confused, most of the time you interacted with holograms and no one ever invited you inside. "Uhm, I don't know if I should."
"Oh, don't bullshit me!," He simply grabbed your forearm and pulled you inside. When he did, the door closed automatically.
Now you felt scared as fuck and the locked door made you scared even more. "Uhm... Your pizza,” you passed the box to the man in the hood.
With his hood still on, Higgs grabbed the pizza box from you and humming happily he went further along the narrow corridor. "Oh, c'mon! Don't stand like an idiot. Get in!"
You swallowed heavily and nodded, following him. You didn't like it but you had no other option.
The corridor led to a huge chamber.
The walls were covered with handwriting, maps and pictures of no one else but Sam Bridges.
Almost in the middle of the room there was a couch and a table. Under the table there were empty pizza boxes.
Man flopped on the couch and opened the box he was holding in hands. He grabbed a slice of pizza and took a bite. He hummed. "Delicious. Make yourself at home. Want some?," He asked, offering you pizza. "Salami and ham."
You looked around and felt the shivers moving up your spine. This didn't look good and you wanted to run. "No, thanks… I don't like salami or pizza itself."
He shrugged. "Whatever you say, honeypot," he replied and ate his slice of pizza only to grab another
"Don't call me that. I don't even know you. Why am I here even?!," You growled angrily while rubbing your elbow.
"The name's Higgs, the particle of God that permeates all existence. You brought pizza and you are the friend of Sam Bridges who is my greatest enemy of all time. So technically, you're kidnapped," Higgs claimed.
You blinked, processing what he just said. "Excuse me...? You kidding, right? I wanna go out. Let me out."
"Take a seat and have some pizza. Rest. Make yourself at home. You're not going anywhere."
"I don't like pizza!," You growled. "I want to go home! I have other stuff to do."
"Shhh, shhh, shhh, stop talking, I can't gather my thoughts when you're yapping like a puppy," Higgs finished his pizza and laid on the couch.
"LET ME OUT YOU, PSYCHO!," You yelled and stomped a few times.
He didn't listen. After a long moment he got up and walked to the desk where a laptop was placed. He took it with him and sat back on the couch.
You frowned and moved closer to close the laptop with your palm. "Let me you! Do you understand English?"
"Can you stop yapping, pretty please?," He pulled the hood off his head and furrowed his brows.
"Can you stop being a dick and let me out?!," You growled. "Sam won't just come because I am gone."
"Oh, he'll. I'm mailing him, don't worry, he's going to come for you," Higgs replied. "If I was a dickhead, you'd be tied up and I'd put a rag into your mouth to shut you up. I didn't do anything. I even offered you pizza! Ah, people are so ungrateful these days."
"Says the guy that kidnapped an innocent woman. You want me to be grateful for keeping me here?," You asked in disbelief, crossing arms over your chest.
"Oh-ho, I heard the storm has come! It's better here I think, you're dry and not exposed to BTs. Or... Are you truly safe here?," He smirked wryly and snapped his fingers.
Without a blink of an eye the floor turned into tar and a creature formed out of it. It was a lion BT with a golden snout. It roared at you.
"Holy Beach!," You whimpered and sat on the couch right next to him, pulling knees right under your chin. "Take it away! I am sorry! I will be good!"
The lion tilted its head and shook its mane, roaring and yawning. Next, the creature licked its paw and sat right in front of you.
"Don't worry, it won't hurt you unless I order so," Higgs informed as he was writing the email.
You only nodded your head, too scared to even move or breathe.
"If you need a hug, you can just tell me," Higgs chuckled. "I'm a great cuddler."
Lion hit your knee with its paw, roaring.
"I would never touch you, ever. I am scared of this thing," you explained, pointing at the lion and whimpering loudly when it hit your knee.
"Don't you see? He demands being petted," Higgs glared at you. "Go on. Pet him. Like this," he reached out and stroked the mane made of tar.
You nodded and slowly tried to pet the lion how Higgs instructed you.
It resulted in a loud purring that was followed by a tail wiggling, sending some tar on the walls. Soon, the lion laid down, his belly exposed.
You looked at Higgs. "Really? I thought BTs are more scary," you said and bent down to scratch the lion's belly.
Lion's paw started shaking as you hit the very right spot. The puring became louder.
Higgs raised his brow while looking at you. "Ah, right. They are scary, indeed. Just don't try this with others outside because they'll kill ya," he reminded. "Ah! Done! Now we only gotta wait for Sam to come and rescue you from the oppression!"
"You think I am that stupid to pet every BT I see?," You asked with a frown. "I don't think he will come but I at least can pet the lion..."
Lion grabbed your arm with both front paws and pulled you to him more so you fell off the couch.
Higgs chuckled. "I forgot to tell you that he is too demanding sometimes."
"I can see! I will need a shower… Ah, I just took one before I left the facility," You sighed sadly, petting the lion.
Lion opened the snout and trailed its tarry tongue across your face.
You only whimpered and sighed defeatedly.
Soon, the terminal beeped again.
"Your saviour has come apparently!," Higgs informed you excitedly and rubbed his hands together getting off the couch.
He walked to the main door of his bunker and put hood back on. He touched the touchpad on the wall and the door opened. "Ah, Sam Bridges! We can finally meet in person!"
Sam put the case he was holding in his hand down on the stone floor and cocked his brow. "Higgs. We do know each other."
"Yes! But technically you came here to meet Peter Englert. So?," He sent Sam  a wide grin.
Sam let out a sigh. "Higgs. I know you're Peter Englert. Now, can I get Y/N back?"
"Yes, please! I'd like to go home, even if I like the lion!," You yelled from the floor while you were still petting the creature. Too bad you couldn't keep it.
Sam narrowed his brows. "Excuse me, is she inside? How? What for?"
"I'll share a secret with you," Higgs put hands to Sam's shoulders and leaned forward to trace the tip of his tongue along Sam's cheek. "I let her in and she enjoyed our common time."
"Get off, man!," Sam pushed Higgs off and wiped his cheek with the top of his gloved palm. "Y/N! Move on!"
You rubbed the lion's snout. "I started to like you. I need to go now, you cute, little thing. Maybe we'll meet again and you won't eat me then!," You said to the creature and got up to quickly run to Sam. "Hi," you give him a smile as soon as you step out of Higgs' bunker.
Sam measured your figure from the bottom to the top with shock written on his face. "Were you fighting BTs? Did he do something to you?," Sam asked, pointing right on Higgs who instantly shook his head for no, raising his hands up.
“He locked me in his safe room and was rude to me but at least he let me pet his BT lion. It's messy as hell but I really loved it," you explained with excitation, looking at Higgs. "Too bad I can't have one."
Higgs sent you a grin and snapped his fingers once again. Within the blink of an eye once again a little puddle of tar appeared at the entrance and a little BT lion cub stepped out of it, meowing loudly.
"Omg, hi, little one!" You laughed and picked the creature gently up. "You are mine now."
"Hola, hola!," Sam raised his tone. "You're not going to take a BT with you. Put it back, now, I am not joking, Y/N. You won't get the BT from this deluded guy."
Higgs crossed arms over his chest. "Let her. This BT belongs to her now, you would have to chop the cord off."
"Exactly. It's mine," you looked at him with an innocent smile, hugging the cub.
The BT lion cub reached its tiny paw towards Sam, but the man immediately took a step back. "This is sick, ridiculous. What are you thinking, Y/N? That we'll get back to Bridges with that BT hidden in your backpack? And you," Sam pointed at Higgs. He was so done with Monaghan's actions and shady plans. "You better get the fuck out of my sigh, I'm so done and believe me - I would kill you but I know it won't affect you in any goddamn way."
Higgs chuckled. "It's good to be a repatriate after all, huh? Y/N, you can keep the BT," he winked at you.
"What's the fucking point of kidnapping her though," Sam pointed at you, "When you simply let her go? What the fuck is going on!"
You pet the cub and shrugged. "He was really disappointed when I came with pizza. So if I understood it correctly, he didn't plan to hurt me and only wanted to get your attention."
You moved a little closer to Sam. "Trust me, he must be a big fan of yours. His walls are decorated with your pictures," you whispered.
Sam cringed at the simple thought of his photos being attached to Higgs' walls.
"I planned on killing you," Higgs claimed openly. "But she came instead of you, and she brought a good pizza. So I rethought my idea and today I won't kill anyone. What a lovely day, isn't it?!"
Higgs approached you and Sam and wrapped his slender arms around you two. "What a lovely day for the encounter!"
You cringed at the hug, knowing that Sam must have felt really uncomfortable with this.
Letting out an awkward laugh you patted Higgs' shoulder. "Yes, yes... It's nice but please, can you let us go?"
Monaghan measured your features with his steel blue eyes. "It's a shame such a beautiful woman is wasting her youth on being a porter though," he touched your cheek with a gloved hand and then leaned down and forward to get on the level of your head. "But due to the fact you were rather a good hostage, I'll let ya go," after these words he licked your cheek. "You taste so good."
Sam cringed harder at the sight and simply yanked you out of Higgs' grasp. "I have enough of you, I mean it," Sam told Monaghan who only chuckled. "What's so funny, Higgs? Maybe it's time to get a life, something?"
Higgs rubbed his bearded chin before replying. "You see, Sam, haunting you and turning your life in a fucking mess became one of the most beloved and fascinating hobbies of mine lately," Higgs concluded with a happy tone. "You're so much fun, aren't you? Especially when you're making all those grimaces of yours when I cause the tar being all over you," Higgs summed up.
Sam closed his eyes for a brief moment, trying to cool himself down. "Amelie created a goddamn psychotic monster," he summed up, his hands clenched in fists.
"Sam, let's go, okay? You two can fight some other time. If he lets us go, let's use it," you said, petting the little lion in your arms and starting to walk away. "Thank you for the lion!"
"The pleasure is mine and mine only, Y/N, it's a pleasure to meet you though. Remember, the name's Higgs!"
Sam dragged you down the hill, right to his car. "Are you insane?"
"Hey! He kidnapped me, did you forget? Okay, maybe more like inviting me inside and locked the door but I felt kidnapped!," You stated. "And since when do you touch anyone?!"
"Since you pissed me off with the childish behaviour of yours, Y/N, he could have killed you."
"Like you see he did not! Overall he was even nice to me. He gave me a little lion!"
Sam let go of your hand. "Don't get fooled by his sweet face," Sam raised his finger up, shaking it in front of your eyes. "He might look cute and behave cute but it's his deluded facade. He's a fucking delusional psychopath who gifted you with the fucking BT. It's nothing normal in this."
"But look. It's my BT now, it won't hurt me or anyone. It will be okay," you said and nodded. "I know but look, he didn't hurt me and I am fine."
"So maybe get back to his bunker and you two can live a happy life, how about that?," Sam growled. "Get in. Time to get back to Bridges as you spent more than half a day with the main terrorist of America."
"I was kidnapped! It's not like I could just leave. You also took your sweet time to get there," you let out a sigh and got in, rolling your eyes.
"I was working and getting throughout BTs territory to get your ass saved, Y/N, so don't bullshit me about me being delayed," he instructed as he took a seat at the wheel.
"Okay, sorry.”
"Ah, and put this fucking thing to the trunk, I don't need the upholstery to be covered in tar," added Sam while pointing at BT lion cub that was on your lap.
"It's connected to me. If the cub is going to the trunk then I go there as well," you answered, petting BT head.
"For fuck's sake. If your sweet tar cub will leave a single tar spot inside, I'll cut the cord, understood?," Sam growled
You rolled your eyes and looked away.
"And please, next time refrain from delivering pizza."
"Not my fault that this is what I get to do. You know that it's not my choice," you sighed looking out of the window.
Sam only nodded in silence. "So at least try to verify to whom you are delivering."

Hi!! I was wondering if Hinata would make contracts with more people (demons? creature?) and what happened with Izumi and kouji, is their any type of bad guy?
It’s a really interesting concept and I’d be interested in reading more if you wanted to post more (sorry if this turned out wired it the first time I’m doing this)
Part 3
Previous | Next
Hinata actually makes a lot of contracts! In fact, they happen in quick succession, so I’ll tell you about one of them really quick ;)
After Oikawa and Iwaizumi, he stumbles across a cat next to a convenience store while Kageyama is inside buying a drink (Kageyama was being indecisive and was taking forever so Hinata just got himself some milk and went outside).
He pets it and the cat doesn’t really purr or anything, just blinks slowly at him. It’s a black white and yellow cat with large gold eyes that look way too smart.
So he decides that he wants to make it purr and enjoy his petting. He goes for the lower back, near the tail, which usually gets a reaction but just makes this cat readjust to cover it. Then he goes to the cats neck the cat reacts a little bit, tilting its head up, but it still doesn’t purr. He moves up to the top of the head, scratching between and around the ears, and finally, finally, the cat purrs just a little bit.
Hinata gets ecstatic and runs his finger over the cats nose, and the cat, seemingly accepting him, paws at his hand. So hinata definitely doesn’t expect it when the cat sniffs his finger, licks it, rubs its cheek against it, and then chomps down.
Hinata’s hand jolts and the cat creeps around the corner of the store as he’s whining about his finger to Kageyama, who finally exits the store. Kageyama and him go inside again to grab a bandaid, and when they return, Hinata looks around to see if the cat was still there.
Instead, at the corner where the cat was laying, there was a boy crouched over a console with blonde and black hair.
His eyes flicked up from his game to meet Hinata’s, and the redhead eagerly sends a, “Good afternoon!”
And the boy smiles a little and licks his lips, where a small speck of red disappears with the swipe of his tongue, and murmurs, “Good afternoon, Shouyo.”
Kageyama immediately gets prickly at that and drags Hinata away, who is very confused about how the boy knew his name and if they were classmates.
A few days later he gets an envelope in the mail that has a good amount of money, lists a minimal amount of terms (what does it mean by “show me how interesting you can be”????), and calls him by his first name, sent from someone named Kenma.
Kageyama snatches the letter from his hands to read it and immediately asks Hinata if he has a sugar daddy. Hinata, mortified, gives a vehement no.
••
There are a few creatures that I can think of that Hinata has the potential to summon.
There are Demons, of course, as we’ve seen.
There are also Angels, who had been mentioned in the first part, although it’s rare to have a full-blooded angel. There’s some stuff about angels and demons that we can get into at some point in terms of their relationship
There are also Beasts, which can take on different forms depending on the mana they’ve been provided or that they have in stock.
Aside from those are the lower creatures, one example being Plant-Beasts, which, as seen with Izumi and Kouji, can transform the way Animal Beasts do, although they need a lot more mana in order to do so.
There’s also some creatures that have no living form until they’ve been blessed with mana, and that’s actually how a lot of these creatures were first made.
Angels were blessed objects or animals turned into beings through holy rituals with very pure mana used to make them, carefully mantained until they took on Angelic form.
Demons were blessed objects or animals turned into beings, but given mana without any formal rituals or care, making them a bit more depraved and unable to exist outside of mana-rich environments (such as the demon realm) for very long without a mana provider.
Some humans can even be turned into Angels or Demons by following the steps above, but they have other guidelines that would’ve had to have been met.
••
Kouji and Izumi enrolled into the wrong Highschool when they were all leaving middle school. They didn’t tell hinata, as they wanted to surprise him on the first day by meeting him there, but then they just. Went to the wrong one during entrance exams and they don’t have any parents to help them with the transfer process.
But, they thankfully talk with hinata over the phone a lot, so they can get his verbal affirmations to maintain their forms, but they still have to take a lot of “sick days” just in case. Hinata still doesn’t know they’re plant-beasts though, smh.
There are a few occasions where they have sleepovers (Kageyama had to stay in another room bc, according to hinata, he was “too scary” and “would give Izumin and Kouji nightmares”) and the two of them sometimes turn back into their normal forms so they can both hug Hinata’s hair and replenish their mana (and also just get to hug hinata bc who wouldn’t want to).
••
In regard to a “Bad Guy”, I’d say that there’s not a direct antagonist but there is something that Hinata’s going to be involved with internally that occasionally feeds into conflict.
Someone that drives Hinata to do more, be more, need more, demand more
And that might cause some problems for him 😋 or maybe not, I’m not sure, I’ve been writing a lot of this off the cuff. There is like, minor conflict, but I don’t know if I’ll make it get bigger.
Thank you for the ask! Don’t worry, it didn’t come off weird (although my scattered response probably did lol)! I’m really thankful to have people interacting with my ideas! :))
••Part 3 of (?)••
•• Send Asks for more! Feel free to ask about characters and send Headcanons! Or if u wanna just talk Haikyuu/ships, I’m good with that too! :) ••

Roguish Women Part 15
Summary: Kate Rosseau is an American who fled to Paris to escape her past life. Now she's dancing and playing the part of a courtesan at the Moulin Rouge. There she meets Tommy Shelby who thinks she can be useful in expanding his empire. But has he been blinded?
Part 16: Kate rages with the green fairy.
Tumblr media
           Kate would continue to work for Tommy but she took any opportunity to work in London. That way, she could have some distance without him getting all up and arms. Eventually, Tommy offered to let her stay in London to do some work for the company. Whether or not he had larger plans, he didn’t really let her know. But she was there in that field with him. She couldn’t ignore the talk about Winston Churchill. She just hoped he knew what he was doing.
“Have you ever been in love, Alfie?”
“That is quite the question, my dear.” The man looked up over his half-moon glasses at the young woman who was sat on the floor of his office.
Kate was kneeling by Cyril’s bed giving him a nice belly rub. She’d grown fond of the dog even though she’d never had one herself. He was a gentle giant and very sweet to her. It was the little thing like Alfie’s dog that kept her in a somewhat good mood. Despite the fact that she felt empty.
“I know it’s personal but I felt like we’ve talked about everything else.”
“Why d’you wanna talk ‘bout love, aye?” Alfie shuffled a few papers around his desk, still planning on working even if he was lead into some conversation about something silly like love.
“Because I didn’t know if you’d ever been in love or not.” Kate stood up, giving Cyril one final pat and going to sit back down across from Alfie.
“Pretty sure you didn’t come in here thinking ‘bout me love life. Think you’re probably thinking ‘bout something else. Your love life, perhaps?”
“Intuitive.” She mumbled and rested her elbows on his desk. “What I say cannot leave this office.”
“Love, if you think I’m gonna go rat on you to Tommy, then you wound me.” He replied. “Thought I made it clear enough that he don’t need to know anything that we talk ‘bout in private.”
She frowned and glared at him. “Who said this has anything to do with Tommy?” She demanded.
Still busy with papers, Alfie rolled his eyes. “When you told me he was expecting a baby and planning a wedding, it sounded like you were telling me someone fucking died. If you didn’t have feelings for him, then you wouldn’t’ve acted so gloomy.”
Sinking lower in her chair, Kate buried her head in her arms. “I’m miserable, Alfie. Absolutely, miserable. Why on Earth did I have to-to fall in love with someone like that?” She protested.
“You’re asking the wrong person. I figured a long time ago that I ain’t gonna be the dutiful Jewish husband that a dutiful Jewish wife welcomes home every night.” Alfie reached for a paper that had been pinned under Kate’s arm. He tapped her elbow, making her move with a frustrated groan. “Now, I can’t see what you see in Tommy Shelby. But I also can’t tell you to just move along. If ya wanted to move along, you would’ve done it by now.”
Kate lifted her head, propping her chin on her arm. “So, what do you suppose I do?”
Alfie paused and finally looked up from his work. He removed his glasses. “Do you want me to fucking lie to you and tell you that Tommy’ll ditch her and come running to you? Or do you want me honesty?”
“Honesty.” She replied meekly.
“We’re creatures of the underworld, yeah, we can’t afford to love.”
It pained Kate to know exactly what Alfie meant. All those years she spent either thriving or surviving. She did it alone because she had to. She couldn’t chance it on a love that could ruin her. Her trust was limited. She ruminated on his words for a moment. “Then why does it hurt so much when I see him with her?”
“Because life is a fucking bitch, Kate. And you need to be tougher than it is. Life ain’t ever done me any fucking favors.”
Kate nodded. “Yeah, it hasn’t done me any favors either.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~
While Kate was bouncing back and forth between Small Heath and London, Tommy was bouncing back and forth between Birmingham and Warwickshire. The site of his newly bought estate. There he planned on raising a family with Grace.
But plans were changing and that’s why he called Kate one evening when he was in Warwickshire and she was in Small Heath.
“Rosseau residence.”
“Kate, it’s Tommy.”
It had been a few weeks since either of them had a long conversation that wasn’t about work. So, Kate half expected him to be calling about something along those lines.
“I’ve sent the invitation in the mail but I wanted to call you before you got it.” He continued.
“Invitation to what?” Maybe a certain social event that they needed to attend to either meet with someone or make a deal. That wasn’t too strange.
“Grace and I are getting married next month.”
Even though he had told her that before, it still hurt to hear the words out loud. A confirmation of her worst fears. And it rattled her so much that she needed to take a deep breath, holding the receiver away from her so he wouldn’t hear. “Well, I’ll look out for the invitation.” She replied. “Thank you for letting me know.”
“I hope you can make it.”
“I doubt I’ll be doing any business that day if the whole company is attending a wedding.” She tried to joke but it fell flat.
They were both silent over the phone for a good while. Both of them lost in their own thoughts about their own things.
Then Kate asked something without really thinking. “I thought she was going to have the baby before the wedding. That’s what you said the plan was, right?”
If she could see him, she would’ve instantly noticed him tense up defensively. “Plans change.” He replied in a clipped tone. Frankly, Tommy was sick of everyone questioning him. He thought what he was doing was right. An old flame of his came back to say she was pregnant, the timing worked out so why should he wait around twiddling his thumbs for a baby to appear? He didn’t care what Polly had to say, that Grace wasn’t showing as much as she ought to be. He didn’t care if Arthur and John questioned the timeline of it all. Tommy was in love and he was going to have something he never thought he’d have. A family and a wife. No one was going to take that away from him.
“Alright.” Kate was taken aback by his tone. “I was just asking.”
“Send in the RSVP whenever you get it.” Tommy hopped off the topic before they both got heated and ended up arguing. “I’ll see you soon.”
She couldn’t get another word in before he hung up the phone. Truth be told, Kate wasn’t questioning Grace and whether or not something was off. She was angry with Tommy. How cavalier he was about breaking her heart. Even if he didn’t know how she truly felt, she felt that she was justified enough to be upset. Pushing up the date of the wedding was like another jab to her heart.
But maybe Alfie was right, she just wasn’t meant to have anything of the sort. Never before had she seen herself betrothed to a man, marrying him, settling down, and having children. Before, she blamed it on her line of work and the things she got herself into. But perhaps it was because she never found someone who she could picture herself with. Then Tommy came along. And when he offered her protection, the first time any man had done so, she felt at ease. She liked how he treated her. Not as a dainty little maiden but almost as someone who could stand right beside him should she prove herself. Someone he trusted with things like being his alibi or dealing with Alfie. Oddly enough, she felt at home with Tommy. Relaxed enough to let down some of her barriers and show her true self to him. But he didn’t care to see her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the invitation arrived to Kate’s flat a couple of days later, she got a sickening feeling in her stomach.
You are cordially invited to the wedding of Mr. Thomas Michael Shelby to Miss Grace Burgess.
None of the words sounded right, as if they were written in an unfamiliar language. The fancy lettering swirled around the cream-colored making her dizzy.
It was a vice, but Kate knew that the only cure to her sudden case of emotional vertigo was a couple of drinks. Or a few. Or more. So, she got dressed and headed to the Garrison.
~~~~~~~~~~
Though it was early in the evening, John and Arthur were already there with a couple of regulars at the bar.
“Katie-Girl, there ya are!” John crowed happily. “Haven’t seen you.”
“Yeah, she’s been spending all her time with Solomons in London.” Arthur rolled his eyes.
Kate smiled. “Now, now, Arthur, you know I love you both equally. I’m not one to play favorites.” She scolded and found a seat at the bar.
“What’ll it be?” Arthur smiled and grabbed an empty glass for her.
“Whatever is strongest.” She placed her purse on the bar. “I’ve had a shit week and I’d like to forget it.”
“I’ll get ya a whiskey.”
John got a wild grin on his face as an idea crossed his mind. “Nah, mate, get her the absinthe. She wants to forget a week not a day.”
Arthur shot his younger brother a dirty look. “You know we ain’t supposed to advertise that shit.” He retorted. “Coppers will come in and take it from us if people go ‘round saying that we’ve got it.”
John just scoffed. “They can’t take anything from us, we’re the Peaky fucking Blinders.” He stood up suddenly and hopped over the bar, much to Arthur’s dismay.
“Gonna scuff up the woodwork you fucking little shit!” Arthur smacked him in the back of the head.
Still, John tucked under the bar and produced a bottle of a green-colored spirit.
“John, I’ve become well acquainted with the green fairy,” Kate informed him. “I lived with Bohemians in France and they drank that shit like it was stout.”
“Then have at it.” John uncorked the bottle and placed it next to the empty glass in front of her.
Kate thought about the thin black lines spelling out Tommy and Grace’s names. The date and time of the wedding. Cordially invited. “Fuck it.” She whispered and poured herself a shot of the bitter-tasting drink.
As the anise-flavored spirit traveled down her throat, she remembered the words of a man she lived with for a part of her time in Paris. An artist who was as eccentric as he was kind-hearted. And although Kate was never the artistic type, she often drank with him just to keep company.
One night she asked why he always drank absinthe. There wasn’t anything appealing to Kate, it didn’t smell very nice and the green hue was off-putting.
“The green fairy makes everyone a visionary.” He replied.
“I don’t want to be a visionary.” She responded. “I’ve nothing to offer the world. I just want to survive.”
He peered at her from behind his small spectacles that always rested precariously on the bridge of his nose. “Then drink, and rage, and forget.”
Kate didn’t have much of a memory of the night after that. But she swore she danced over the rooftops of Paris until the stars took a hold of her and cradled her. Instead of waking up in the sky, however, she woke up on the floor of her bedroom, not able to make it to her bed before she passed out. But her roommates said she had sung well into the night. She had danced. And at one point she had thrown open the windows and shouted into the night. Something about life or something about death, no one remembered precisely.
In Birmingham, she raged. Though, she was good-natured at the Garrison. For the length of time that John and Arthur allowed her to stay. Eventually, Arthur demanded John bring her to Tommy’s or Polly’s. That way someone could look after her so she didn’t accidentally fall or hurt herself.
Since the betting shop was closer, that’s where John took Kate. Not that he was being lazy, it was just Kate was so drunk she could barely walk without stumbling every step.
She rambled on and on to him the walk over there. Not making much sense, either because her words were so slurred or she was speaking in a multitude of different languages. Stitching them together to try and make sense of her own drunken state.
Practically dragging her along, John managed to get her to Tommy’s doorstep and he knocked.
Since Kate started drinking early and it didn’t take long before she got drunk on absinthe, it was still a reasonable hour to be knocking.
Still, Tommy was annoyed when he saw his younger brother was toting along a very inebriated Kate. “What the hell happened?”
“Absinthe,” John explained. “I’m sorry, Tom, I didn’t think she’d take more than a shot but she was hell-bent on tryna drink the whole bottle ‘fore we got it away from her.”
“For fuck’s sake, John.” Tommy ran a hand over his face. “Fine, I’ll look after her.”
“Where are we?” Kate slurred.
“Tommy’s, you’re gonna stay here for the night so he can look after ya,” John explained and helped her inside.
Kate’s reached out to grab something to support herself. But her vision was so muddled that she got a handful of Tommy’s shoulder instead of the banister or the door.
“Go on home, John.” Tommy sighed and shut the door.
“Tom, Tommy.” Her knees buckled for a moment and she decided to slump onto the stairs.
“Yes, Kate?” He watched as she reclined back on the stairs, staring up at the ceiling with a bemused look.
“I could swing from the chandelier.” She murmured like an awe-struck child.
Tommy glanced up and saw nothing but a water-damaged ceiling. “We don’t have a chandelier here.”
“Pft, I know. I could go to your big, fancy-schmancy house.” She giggled and rolled her head to the side to look at him.
“I don’t think Grace would appreciate you hanging off the chandelier.”
A sour look damaged her blissful expression. “Yeah, well I don’t give a flying fuck what Grace thinks.” She muttered and attempted to sit herself up. Instead, she slipped down to the bottom step, her legs sprawled out, outfit disheveled. If she wasn’t drunk, she would’ve been aghast at her appearance in front of Tommy.
He raised an eyebrow at her. “Where’s this talk coming from?” He inquired.
“Fuck off.” She grumbled and sloppily adjusted the hem of her skirt.
“You’ve been acting strange ever since the Derby. If you’ve got something to say, you ought to say it.” Tommy insisted firmly. He wasn’t fond of the distancing that Kate had enacted between him and her. Especially not after what they had gone through together in that field.
“M’not saying anything.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “Not saying a fucking word. Nothing!”
“Fine.” Tommy knew there was no reasoning with someone so intoxicated. “Then let’s get you to bed.” He went to pick her up.
“Hey!” She smacked his hands away or at least tried because she missed. “Don’t touch me.”
“You can’t possibly think you’re going to make it up those stairs on your own. You’ll fall and crack your head open and I don’t want that in me house.” He retorted.
“I’ll crack my head open if I damn well want to.” She replied like an insolent child. “I don’t care.”
Tommy took a deep breath and let it out before he got really upset. To remedy the situation and get her in bed, he picked her up and threw her over his shoulder.
Kate protested as much as she could without becoming motion sick. “Let me go!” She whined.
“I will once you’re upstairs.”
“I’m gonna fucking bite you if you don’t let me go.” It was the only thing she could think of as the rest of her body felt like lead.
He shook his head. “I have three younger siblings; you don’t think I’ve been bitten in a fight before?” He challenged and continued on his way upstairs with her.
“Fuck you.”
Tommy went into his bedroom and plopped her down on the bed. “There, lie on your side.” He directed.
“Can’t fucking stand you.” She snipped but obliged and curled up on her side, facing away from him.
“We can talk once you’ve sobered up tomorrow.” He turned off the lamp in the corner and pulled the quilt up over her. “Maybe you’ll make more sense in the morning.”
“There’s nothing to make sense of.” Kate felt like the bed was swaying beneath her. Almost like a cradle rocking back and forth. She grabbed at Tommy’s pillow, clutching it close to her like a teddy bear. “I’m in love with you and you’re marrying her.”
Tommy froze in place. He waited for her to say something else. To say she was kidding, or say something else funny to confirm that she was just out of her mind drunk. But she didn’t do either. “You love me? Kate?”
The only reply he got was her soft snores as she settled into a dreamless, painless sleep.
A Man On Fire - Chapter 52
That's close enough” she calmly said as he kept on wanting to come as close to her as she would allow, she judded her hip pushing her hands even deeper into her pockets, this wasn't ok, he had too much time to think of a whole lot of excuses. “Coco..I..” he stuttered, “I know my own name, Jay, was there anything else?” she snarled, her patience was starting to run dangerously low “nothing happened..” he quickly said, his mouth awfully dry, “are you really sure about that? Because I'm not, if nothing happened then we wouldn't be here”. A shiver ran down her spine as he waited too long to answer again “it's simple really, either you start talking or I start walking..and the truth this time, I need..no I deserve the truth”. He bit his lip just a little too hard, this was ridiculous, fuck this, I'm out of here “Harper! no..wait!” he jumped in front of her wanting to head back to the door “I'm telling you the truth..nothing happened, she can say whatever she wants but I didn't sleep with her”. Harper looked up at him, she could tell if he was lying right? she could see it in his eyes, he wasn't that good an actor or a liar for that matter, all she saw in those blue pools was a crushing sadness, give him the chance to explain “I'm listening” she backed down a little. To her surprise he walked over to the nightstand, picked up the phone and ordered some roomservice “sit down” he said as he put the receiver down “please” he repeated when she hesitated, “you need food and a drink? Really? It seems to me you're just trying to buy time, Jared” she was cold, the cold in her heart started to spread through her body. “I'm not..it was Shannon..that last day with you in New York, he sent me a text in the plane..she was there, apparantly just dropping by..” she sat down just watching him, was there a spark in his eyes when he talked about that trollup? Nope. “I'm not gonna lie, we were together for quite a while, she was..a groupie, you know, the classic story, model agencies send models to shows, benefits, thrive on the fame of..whoever they can get their claws into, were we exclusive? No we weren't, we'd hook up when we were in the same town and then stay together until one of us had to leave again” he blurted out, it sounded too credible “oh, so I was just a testdrive inbetween hookups with her, right? I should've known, goddammit I can be so naïve, I always thought that love..real love is as simple to everybody else as it is to me, just one on one, simple, beautiful, true” Harper sighed shaking her head “I don't care if I sound old-fashioned..”. Jared couldn't hold back any longer and sat down next to her putting his finger over her lips “you're not a testdrive and Val is nothing to me alright? How many more times do I have to tell you that? You are..you..I would fly to the moon and back for you..what I feel for you is something I've never felt for anyone..”. There was a knock on the door “just a second” he had trouble disconnecting his eyes from her mouth before he got up and let his roomservice being rolled in, “you hungry? I ordered everything you like..”.
”Back and forth, back and forth, I keep giving my heart to you and every time I get it handed back to me, nicely diced and sliced on a silver platter, I'm done with that shit, Jay..isn't it too early in this relationship to constantly cheat? Obviously you're not 100% happy with me and I don't know what else you want from me” Coco took a sip from her latte and put it down again. “I didn't cheat..I swear! How many more times do I have to tell you? Yes I woke up naked with her next to me, I told her to leave over and over again, the last thing I know is that she did..I went to sleep and..the only thing I can think of is that she spiked my drink at the club..I mean she even stole the key to my room, she just can't be trusted” his heart jumped in his throat, please just believe me, it's the truth “if I wasn't competely happy and satisfied in our relationship, would I go to these lengths to try and explain, to try and convince you of the truth? I know you find it hard to believe, and I know that there's a lot of prejudice about the music industry with the sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll clichés, but I swear I'm telling you the truth?!”. His question was met by her staring him down “if you are, then you've got a psycho on your hands..” she licked the milky moustache from her toplip “so what are you planning to do about it?” there, the ball was in his court now. Wait, did that mean that they..wowww “because I'm at the end of my tether with you, Leto..” she added “I'm not gonna keep doing this with you over and over again, so you tell me, what are you gonna do about it? If you wanna keep me you're gonna have to convince me that I'm the one you want, because let me be absolutely clear with you: I would absolutely leave you before I have to share you, so either you make a clean break with those past lovers or I walk”. How did he even deserve this creature? She got up and straightened her shirt “so if you're not gonna talk, I am” she started making her way to the door, “wait! Where are you going?” he shot up as well, “I'm going to talk to 'your Val', see what she has to say, what room is she in?”.
”Coco, if you go in there, it's gonna be drama all over again” he tried to stop her, “First, I'm never gonna be able to sleep with all this caffeine running around my system, if anything I want to walk off these lattes, second: so frikkin what? She's put me and you on the spot, I say we give her a cookie of the same dough, besides if you have nothing to hide then there's nothing to worry about, except for the fact that she tried to 'rape', intimidate and abuse you” she turned with a funny look in her eyes. She was right though, he hadn't done anything wrong and it was high time he got to spend some quality time with his lover, she seemed to be willing to listen to him. The fact that he actually had to call his brother to ask what room Val was in, lifted her mood a little, so it could be true after all that they didn't hook up, or maybe everything went down in his room..fuck it Harper, just wait until you heard her side of the story ,“528” he looked around and pointed at the door behind them and she didn't hesitate to knock on the door. Val opened the door and seeing them stand there a scowl fromed around her lips “Hello again Val” Harper didn't hesitate and pushed past her, “ah! Packing already I see?!” she let her eyes glide over the open suitcase, “no, I'm not packing” Val stuck out her chin to her, “well, you're not unpacking either, so in order for you to catch the first flight out of Rome at first light, let's not waste any more time so how about you show me the compromising pictures or a video would be even better” Harper gave the room a quick look around “where's your phone? Oh! There it is!” and strutted over to the nighttable.
“What are you doing? That's mine, give it here” Val quickly tried to snatch the phone out of her hands, “true, it's your's but I bet there's stuff on there that you're dying to show me, I'm here now, so come on, show me” Harper calmly said. Which was more than could be said about Val who started to get more and more aggressive and annoyed “show you what?”. Harper gave her a calm smile and shrugged “oh I don't know, how about the proof that you and Jared got it on last night, because spoilsport here” pointing at him, Jared's jaw dropped a little “is getting really old and alzheimery and says he can't even remember what happened so I want to see with my own two eyes what happened or didn't happen”. Coco could see Val swallow hard, she definitely didn't see this coming “I know for a fact that predators and psychopaths like you will go to any length to get their prey and they make absolutely sure to get it all on camera just to relive and relive the moment over and over again and to put it on your instagram and boast about it to your thousands of friends, so how about it? You know what they say: if you don't have the pictures to prove it then it didn't happen”. Was it nervousness that made her fondle her phone and clutch it tighter in her claws? “you're calling me a psychopath? That's rich coming from a loser like you and who are you calling old? Aren't you the one who didn't even know about social media or e-mail until a few weeks ago? Let me remind you that a lady never kisses and tells, that video is for Jared and me”. Jared stepped forward and snapped “I'm here so come on..show me! I want to see everything”, if there was any more proof she needed to know that Jay had been telling the truth, then this was it, she held her breath as she watched that pouting princess go bright red, “come on Val, I'm waiting here, show me the goddamn video”. Val crossed her arms over her chest and cocked her head pretentiously “no”, and all it did was make Jared shake his head “so there isn't one, right ok..just a tip though should you want to post that video later, if it actually exists, just think about the fact that you might go and tell the police that you probably drugged and raped a guy, we could smear that out in the press and on your beloved social media, see what kind of story that'll give?..We're through, Val, we already were a long time ago and stupid old me thought we could still have a friendship, I want you out of this hotel by morning and hope that I won't press charges or you won't have a career to go back to”.
Harper felt relieved when he closed the door behind him, like a ton of bricks had been lifted off of her shoulders “some fresh air?” he certainly could do with some, “definitely”. They walked and walked talking things through, every time she dug her cold hands deeper into the pockets of her thin leather jacket he wanted to throw his arm around her but could he do that already? Oh fuck it, “hmmm, should you be doing that?..” she looked at his hand that rested on her shoulder, what? his heart skipped a beat, but then she nodded in the direction of a certain number of girls still flocking around the entrance of the hotel “I mean..do you really want to show them what we really are?” followed by a smile that could melt ice. “Hell yeah! Let's go” he pulled her even tighter against him, god, it felt so good to feel her against him until one of the girls noticed them and let out a high pitched shriek, “I'll let you handle this” she breathed and stepped out of his embrace with a slight smile. “What are y'all still doing here? Aren't you freezing? We definitely were during our nightly stroll” he openly talked with them, holding her hand tightly, something that didn't go unnoticed by anyone. “I just love your work..I do a bit of drawing and painting myself” one of them was brave enough to step up to her instead of Jared, “you do? Oh thank you that's so sweet! Wanna show me some of your work as well?” she asked the girl who held up her phone with shaking hands “relax sweetie, it's only me” she grinned to put the girl a little bit more at ease. The other girls seemed to have equal interest in her, asking him all sorts of questions. “Everyone want a last picture? Yeah? Harper, honey? You have to be in it too” that was his way of rounding up things, he wanted to go back inside and finally be alone with her again, he had missed the feel of her lips so so so much. “Oh, sure” she gave the girl she'd been talking to a smile and pulled her over to the group that was forming, Jared held up one of their phones, took the picture and finally they said their goodbyes, taking her hand again as he slowly started guiding her inside the hotel. “They were lovely..” she zipped open her jacket as the doors closed behind them, “they are..but can you just stop talking for one second?” he grinned, “huh?” she frowned, but then he cupped her face in his hands and pushed his lips on hers', he didn't care if the doorman saw or the fans that were staring at them outside, feeling her this close to him made the world around him fall away. Her head started spinning and when she lifted her arms to rest on his back she could have sworn she heard little bursts of laughter and excitement coming from outside, did it matter? No because she was in his arms again and this stupid battle was finally over.
event: dayton’s annual bbq location: parking lot, quentin’s tesla
[continued from the event chat]
quentin: Quentin had made his way back to the parking lot to put his guitar back into his car. His 2018 Tesla sp 85 was parked away from most of the other cars, in one of the darkest spots of the lot. He sat in the drivers seat with his door propped open, as he cut up a line on the back of one of his old cd cases. Hoping no one  who would see him and want to cause trouble.
belly: Belly was everywhere and nowhere all at once. Her shroom trip was at the tippy top, everything feeling long and tall and like time was stopping. Her hair was wild, up in a pony tail and her brother's old sweatshirt hung around her frame almost enough to hide that she was wearing shorts. She was int he parking lot somehow, Belly spotting a shiny cool looking car and - ooh, someone was cutting blow. Like a hawk with that shit, she was. "Yo cool guy!" the girl called, skipping over to the Tesla, "usually I don't approach strangers out of fear, it is 2019 right? But this looks iconic as hell. Mind I snap a pic before I start buggin' you for a bump?"
quentin: Hearing the girls voice as she approached his car, he looked up to see who it was. His eyes peering through his dark hair as it hung in his face. A small grin stretched across his lips at her comment and he shrugged slightly to the side. Normally he wouldn’t let anyone snap these type of photos of him, for fear of discrimination. He was the lead singer in a pretty well known band after all. “Sure, go for baby girl”’he responded. “Just don’t use it to black mail me and I’ll give you all the bumps you want.”
belly: "It's for my personal viewing pleasure, but if you're lucky I'll send it to you," Belly replied with a smirk, eyelashes batting. It felt like her steps backward took forever, the air thicker than it had been before the trip had wrapped it's arms around her. Bringing out her phone, she opened up the camera app and snapped a couple of pics, making sure to get the whole Tesla and the the boy in a candid position. All for the 'gram even on a shroomy trip. She'd look later to see if they were any good. "Real MVP for leaning into the bit. Most people tell me to fuck off," she told him moving back towards the car, eyeing the fine white powder and then over the lines of the car.
quentin: “Ah, I see. Fair enough” he chucked lightly. Unable to keep his mind from exploring a bit into his dirty thoughts. He watched her as she took a few steps back and leaned back into his seat. Continuing to focus on cutting up the powder as she snapped the photos of him. “Yeah, well, I’m not in the business of telling people to fuck off. Unless they did me dirty of course” he added. Smiling up at her as she reapproached him and eyed his car. “You wanna get in?” he asked. Reaching out to pop the locks to unlock the passenger door.
belly: "Do you really do that? Tell people to fuck off?" Belly asked, taking the liberty to lean onto the car, her back pressed against the curve of it's frame. The metal felt strange on the back of her thighs but the sweatshirt was covering her back and arms, keeping her from really being able to gauge the way the vehicle felt. She turned, stray curls falling into her eyes from her poorly secured pony tail of wild hair. Eyes twinkling, Bellamy wasn't thinking about stranger danger, just yes. He popped the door and Belly pushed off the car, but she didn't move around the Tesla, instead literally climbing over the boy's lap and through to the passenger side. After getting situated, she couldn't help but laugh, Belly feeling like it had been an army crawl through Alice's tumble to wonderland. "Ooh, this is comfy!"
quentin: “Nah, not really” he replied honestly with another soft chuckle. Truthfully, Quentin didn’t have a mean bone in his body. Although, he was a Scorpio after all, so his words could get sharp when they needed too. His eyes shifted between what he was doing and watching her as he spoke, and he was a bit taken by surprise as she decided to crawl over him. “Oh shit..” he gasped, his words laced with laughter as he held up the old cd case in his hands to keep the drugs safe. “Damn” he grinned over to her shaking his head. He could tell she was fucked up already. But he wasn’t really sure on what. “Yeah.. it is” he nodded. “It’s got some pretty tight features as well.” He added. He reached over to the touch screen and set it on a flickering fire place setting and smiled over to her.
belly: "Oh shit, ambiance," Belly practically sang, wiggling in the seat as her eyes fixated on the screen. She had been in one of these cars before but she was pretty out of it then, ubering home after a club experience. "I'm Belly, by the way. I can't seriously call you Tesla Boy in my head, imma need a name." Her head leaned back into the seat, letting herself relax as her head rolled so she could properly take his face in. Belly didn't let herself stare, the blow on the CD case in his hands looking shiny and crisp, too inviting for it's own good. "Dear god please tell me we're gonna rail this out of a Benjamin and not a Washington. We're in a Tesla for god sakes."
quentin: Quentin chuckled, amused by the girl and her reactions. “Belly? That’s an interesting name. I assume it’s short for something?” he asked. Sliding his hand into his back pocket beneath him to pull out his wallet. “I’m Quentin” he licked his lips as he opened his wallet, his eyes gazing over to her as she spoke her next comment. “But of course... I like to do things in style. Now you know” he teased. Pulling the Benjamin from his wallet and rolling it up with just one hand. “Would you like to do the honors?” he asked, holding the cd case out toward her and offering her the rolled up bill.
belly: Everyone always asked about her name. It was like a built in ice breaker at times and Bel didn't mind it. "Dad was hellbent on naming me after Bellamy the pirate. Belly just kinda stuck from day one," the girl explained, picking some lint off her sweatshirt. And then some of her hair and then a leaf. Where had that leaf come from? "Imma call you Q. Quentin's nice but it's so long. Belly and Q. Kinda like Bonnie and Clyde. Let's take this fucker out, make some mischief?" she teased, pushing off the seat again to sit up right. Belly couldn't help being drawn in, every movement of his slow and steady and seemingly deliberate. "Ooh party tricks! You're gonna have to teach me to one hand roll that perfectly, that was hot fire." Bellamy practically squealed in delight when Quentin offered the first line, her fingers delicately taking the hundred dollar bill from his hand. "Hold it for me? I don't trust myself and you look like you can keep steady?"
quentin: Quentin honestly had no clue who Bellamy the pirate was, but he was sure his older brother would. Considering he was the one obsessed with pirates. He figured he would just as him about it later. For now, he just smiled and nodded his head. Typical move for someone who had no clue. “Q works for me. My mom used to call me curly Q.” His eyes sort of drifted off as he recalled the memory of his birth mom. But, he quickly snapped back into the moment as Belly popped up and suggested making some mischief. “I think we can cause our own mischief right here” he grinned. Letting her take the bill from him as he held the cd case steady for her. “Oh, you have no idea how steady I can be” he teased. Watching her as he wetted  his lips with his tongue and pulled his bottom lip between his teeth.
belly: "Spicy," she responded, wiggling her eyebrows at him. Belly readjusted herself, folding her knees under her so that she could leverage herself when she leaned over. Silently she wished there had been music playing, old school R&B or something good to vibe to, but beggars couldn't be choosers. They were in a goddamn Tesla for crying out loud. Pushing all of that aside, Belly pressed a nostril closed and used the rolled bill to snort up the fat line Q had so generously provided her, making sure she got the little particles that had fallen out of the cylinder due to not sorting hard enough. Her sinuses stung heavy, nose sniffling and doing a quick dance to move around the blow. Bel was sure that the move helped get everything to her brain faster. "Hell ya, Q, this is good, good shit." Without asked, Belly swiped a little of the powder with her finger, swiping it lazily over her front gums and teeth. "Your turn!"
quentin: “Mhm” he hummed. His grin never fading as he kept his eyes on her. How lucky was he to have this beautiful creature approach him, and actually agree to get into his car to do blow with him? Once she had snorted the line he provided, he licked his lips again. Subconsciously feeling the high she had radiating off of her as she danced around in the seat. “It’s the best” he nodded. Knowing he had paid a pretty nice amount for the purest blow the guy had to offer. He took the bill from her as she frosted her teeth and he held it between his fingers. Pressing one nostril close with the same hand, he snorted two lines one right after the other. The burning sensation causing him to close his eyes and lean his head back against the seat. “Shit...” he almost moaned from the pleasurable feeling. Pinching his nostrils closed as he let the burn slide down the back of his throat. Finally reopening his eyes, he shifted them over to the girl beside him. Never picking up his head as he bit on his bottom lip. “You wanna make out?” he asked. Reaching out with his hand to turn up the volume in his car. Revealing the music that was spilling over his speakers in silence.
belly: The way he cursed send shivers up her spine, baby hairs playing at her neck spiking. What a weird sensation. Reaching up, a finger twirled curly tendrils, a habit that she couldn't escape. Her body was surging with energy now, craving a couple more lines if he was willing to give it. Licking her lips, Belly leaned back into the seat again, watching him recover from the blow he had railed hard. She felt bad for his nose in a way. Strange, considering she should be feeling bad for her poor sinuses after the day she had. Quentin was attractive, she had to admit that, but anyone that could master two fattys like that was smokin' to Belly Jackson. The next two seconds had Belly laughing, really laughing but not in a mean way, just in an unexpected one. Her giggles were like bells in her ears, mixing with the melody that played through the stereo. But she shrugged then, reaching over for the CD case with the small bits of powder left over. Her eyes stayed on him, swiping another finger through the blow and taking a small bump. Not the most effective, but it worked. After when the thought processes connected and she had to blink a couple of times as the sting of the coke really pulsed through her, the girl nodded, placing the CD case on the dash. She was curious and he was attractive. "Hell ya," Belly responded with a nod, leaning up on her knees and moving closer to him.
quentin: Quentin couldn’t keep his eyes off of her. The way she twirled her hair, and licked her lips. Maybe it was the coke now reeling through his body, but his heart began to race. Her giggles causing him to smile and chuckle a bit himself. He let her take the cd case from him, and he watched her intently. His lips parting as she snorted the last remaining particles left on the case. She was heavenly, and he was hooked. Prince’s greatest hits spilled over the speakers as the  beautiful girl inched closer to him, and he reached out to place his hand onto her side. Making a tight fist in her sweatshirt as he pulled her onto his lap and brushed his lips against hers.
belly: Raspberry Beret soothed her soul, her body moving along to the beat as she became putty. Her skin was set on fire and Belly wasn't sure if it was the fact that she was wearing a sweatshirt or if it had been the cocktail of drugs she was now on. When she had started munching on shrooms Belly was hoping that her night would become an adventure and sure enough, Q was helping her manifest this destiny. The car doors were open for any bystander to see, but this didn't stop her from letting Quentin pull her into his lap. Moving smoothly over to his side of the car, her long legs found a place on either side of him, her arms snaking around his neck and fingers playing with soft strands of hair as their lips made contact. Electric, buzzing energy surged through her, Belly parting her lips and letting their kiss deepen as the chemical goodness of the blow seeped between their mouths. She almost moaned at how good it was kissing him, less aware of her surrounding now and more focused on the warmth he radiated and the way his hand felt on her side.
quentin: As Belly’s body situated over his, he reached down and leaned the seat back just slightly. The weight of her against him causing him to feel as if he were sinking right through to the bottom of the car. He tried not to become too aroused too soon, but the way her lips burned against his as she deepened their kiss had him defeated. He let a soft hum escape him as he brought his free hand up to the back of her neck. Grabbing a handful of her hair that dangled there. His heart was beating even fast now, his adrenaline though the roof. The thought of being watched thrilling him to the core as he gripped onto her waist even tighter.
belly: The girl half squealed as the seat repositioned backwards, one hand pressing against the seat to keep herself steady. Eyes fluttering closed, Belly sank deeper into the kiss, lost somewhere between surging energy and a fuzzy reality. Normally she wouldn't be kissing a stranger, but it wasn't like it hadn't happened before. Everyone had to have their fun here and there. This guy though? His lips were intoxicating, as if Belly was drinking up  sweet lemon drop at the bar she frequented. The contact of his hand behind her neck had Belly sighing again, her tongue finally slipping from her mouth and caressing his bottom lip in hopes he'd let her have access to him.
quentin: God, were her lips delicious. The heat radiating between them causing his breaths to fall heavy against her mouth as the taste of her lips saturated his. He lifted his head up slightly from the back of his seat, trying to get as close to her as possible. As if he couldn’t press their lips hard enough together to get the satisfaction he craved. Her lips had become his only supply  of oxygen at this point as he parted  his willingly to allowed her all the access she desired. He couldn’t keep himself from  growing hard beneath her, as their bodies rocked together to the sound of their saliva exchanging mouths.
belly: Belly didn't mind that the world could have been their spectator, lips moving time with each other as if they hadn't just met. She was flying so fucking high, her skin radiating with energy that she hadn't felt before in her nineteen years. Sure, there had been strangers before him, drugs before him, people that she liked to fuck before him. But this was somehow different and familiar all in the same breath if that was possible. His lips and tongue tasted like delicious chemicals, her own mouth numb from the coke but still able to taste him. Belly's hips moved against his lap involuntarily, not really knowing what she was doing in the moment but just going with it all. There wasn't a chance in hell she'd say no. He felt too good, his mouth tasted too good. His hands on her, his lips and tongue - god, she had to be dreaming. Belly almost groaned into him then, their mouths crushed together and working rhythmically to Prince. This had to be written in the universe somewhere, this didn't just happen by chance. And fuck, Belly thought, rotating her hips down into his lap. She could feel him beneath her through his pants and the thick denim of her shorts. Needing a little bit of oxygen, Belly pulled back, peppering cute but sensual kisses over his cheek and to his neck. Every part of his skin tasted good. "Fuck," Belly moaned into his skin, licking a spot on his neck before using her lips to suck a small spot under his ear.
quentin: It didn’t matter what she did at this point, he was hooked. Hook line and sinker, and he was the bait. He would have conformed to anything she wanted or needed of him, no questions asked. He was a pleaser after all, and a bit of a tease. But, the way she rolled her hips down onto his, she was the one in control here. Not that he wouldn’t try to fake it anyway. He wasn’t very open to being submissive with most people, but here he was. Putty in her arms. His head tilted back against his seat again as her soft kisses burned across his skin. His lips parting from how good her lips felt pressed against him, and he hummed softly. He moved his hands to the hem of her sweatshirt and he tugged on it suggestively. Wanting to remove it from her body, but only with her permission.
belly: It was obvious with the way he pulled at the fabric of her oversized sweatshirt that he wanted it off, and Belly didn't question it. She leaned back for a second, looking at him underneath her with a suggestive smile as she pulled it off and tossed it to the passenger seat. With a cute grin, Belly revealed herself to him, the top half of herself only wearing a lacy black swimsuit top. That only lasted a couple seconds though, her fingers threading into his hair to tilt his head back against the seat, her lips barely brushing his to tease him. "You taste amazing," Belly cooed, closing her eyes and melting through his body again. Her lips finally pressed against his seductively, moving her hands to caress his jawline and neck as they kissed.
quentin: Quentin’s eyes scanned her body as she pulled off her sweatshirt. Her black Lacey swim top causing his lips to curl into a seductive grin, as his hands gravitated to her body. In a matter of seconds she was pulling his head back by his hair and he let out a breathy moan. Fuck, she knew exactly how to keep him wanting more, and she knew exactly what to say to keep him invested. “So do you, mon cherì.” His words flowed out in an almost whisper, with a low tone as his body trembled with desire. He wanted to be inside her, completely. Body and soul. Maybe this was the influence of the drugs he had mixed through out the day, but he didn’t care. He simply wanted her, and he kissed her as if she were all he needed to survive
belly: Belly half giggled into his mouth as she let her lips taste him, really memorizing how good they felt under her own. Quentin was his own drug entirely. Sure the coke helped, but he was warm and fuzzy. He was blurred edges. He was addicting properties and if anyone knew Bellamy Jackson, they knew that she was drawn to that more than a bee was to honey. Every move was magic, sparks that flew into her skin and brain and Belly never flinched from it, instead leaning in harder and hoping that she'd be burned. Was that french? Anyone else in this position would have most likely cared about who could see them, how exposed they were to the world, but not Belly, instead letting her fingers flutter over his shoulder and her hips rotate over his once more. Hearing a couple people walking in the parking lot cheer, she grinned into the kiss, breathless and wanting more. "Close the doors?" she suggested, never really leaving his lips to do so. Bellamy was hooked, the taste of him just as fuzzy as any line would be. "Now?"
quentin: Her giggle was intoxicating to him. He could listen to that sound all night and never tire of it. He was drawn to every little mysterious thing about her, and he was making it very evident. His body reacting to every little thing she did. He lifted his hips slightly to roll them into hers as one of his hands trailed across her body to her breast. His other hand grasping the side of her face as the sounds of cheering from outside faded into the background. He nodded his head eagerly to her suggestion to close the doors, but he moved not. The thought of breaking away from her for the action seemed impossible. As she spoke again, he fought against himself to sit up and pull the door closed. Pushing her back against the stirring wheel as his eyes buried into hers. They were parted and he wanted to take advantage of the space. Bringing his hands to his jeans to unbutton them and pull them open. His button up white tee was already mostly unbuttoned but he pulled against the remaining buttons until his shirt was completely revealing his bare chest beneath it . Licking his lips as he kept his eyes on her, he boldly voiced his desires. “I wanna fuck you. Right here, right now” he almost demanded. Moving his hands to the button on her shorts as he leaned forward to press his lips to her chest.
belly: She didn't stop him, letting Quentin push her against the wheel. Belly enjoyed it, really, the eye contact almost deeply intimate as he told her what he wanted. Every touch was fire against her skin, the look on his face evident that he was feeling just as drawn to her as she was to him. Bellamy didn't expect this. It had been all of fifteen minutes while the fire graphic cackled on the screen of the Tesla and Prince played through the speakers. She welcomed every movement, every touch. Her eyes were hooked on his movements, watching as he unbuttoned the rest of his shirt and followed his fingers as they undid his shorts. "Shit, okay," Belly moaned breathless, her head tipping back at the sheer thought of what he could do to her if he actually touched where she desired. Just his gaze alone had her trembling. Her hand pressed against the back of his head, guiding him against her chest. "You're so fuckin' hot, Q, wow."
quentin: This was the last thing he expected when the wild eyed beauty walked up to his car. Sure, she was sexy as hell, and the thought crossed his mind. But, never would he have thought she would actually be in to it, and damn, he was glad that she was. Her skin tasted like salty sweetness as his lips caressed across her chest and he trailed soft kisses up the side of her neck. Nibbling at the skin below her ear as his hands brushed gently up her sides. Stopping just beneath her breast and letting his fingers push up underneath the fabric of her Lacey top.  Revealing her naked breast as he pulled her body back against his. Their skin on skin contact causing him to lose even more space in his jeans. He wasted no time bringing one of his hands to unhook her top, his other hand navigating between them to push into her shorts between her legs.
belly: A sigh of pleasure pushed through Belly's lips as Quentin's made their way over her skin and up her neck. It was expert, the way they moved. Modest was something that she was not, so the fact that they were in view of others that peered through the windshield didn't necessarily bother her, in fact Belly welcomed his hands on her as he pulled her swimsuit top to reveal her chest to him. Being pressed against him with their skin melting into each other, the thrill, god it was all pulling her deeper and deeper under her high, Belly's arms open wide to greet the crash. Her own hands pressed patterns into any skin of Quentin's that she could reach, wanting to feel him and ground herself in his body. Top now discarded, her hips angled themselves so that he could undress her further, using her legs to sit up a little. She was already sopping. Wet from excitement and thrill and his touch and the anticipation of his next move. One of her hands moved over his lap, feeling his hardened length under his pants and with a smirk, her fingers buttoned them too.
quentin: Their bodies moved together like poetry. Hands and lips connecting to each other in any place they could as they worked on getting each other undressed. Luckily Quentin’s Tesla offered more space than a typical car, but he was sure they would both end up with bruises in the end. Her shorts were off, and her hands were on him again. Feeling him through the fabric of his jeans as she worked on getting his pants open. A small grin spread across his lips at her touch, Hoping she liked what she felt. He reconnected their lips as he sat up slightly in his seat and let his shirt drop off the back of his shoulders.
“So where did you disappear to last night?” Helen asks, as she packs her suitcase.
“I got married.” You say.
“What?” Helen gasps.
“I got married.” You say.
“To who?!”
“Bucky Barnes.” You say, smirking.
“Like the Bucky Barnes that’s in The Avengers?” Helen asks.
“I actually think Bucky is a stage name.” You say. “Cause according to our marriage certificate is first name is James.”
“Bucky’s his nickname.” Helen says, crossing her arms. “Where you two at least drunk?”
“Nope.” You say. “We were both stone cold sober.”
“I don’t know if I believe you.” Helen murmurs, glaring at you.
“Give me one minute.” You say, grabbing your phone. You scroll down to Hubby and hit facetime. It rings about 5 times before Bucky picks up.
“Hey, Wifey.” He says, his voice thick with sleep. “What are you doing up so early?”
“Our flight leaves in like 2 hours.” You say, smiling. “Also its 10:00 in the morning, it’s not early.”
“Life of a rock star, Babe.” Bucky chuckles. “Party all night, sleep all day.”
“Holy shit.” Helen murmurs. “You married Bucky Barnes.”
“Say hello to Helen, Darling.” You say, moving your phone so your friend was in view.
“Hello, Helen.” Bucky says. “It’s nice to see you again.”
“Bucky Barnes knows my name.” Helen squeaks. “And he’s married to my best friend.”
“Told you.” You laugh, putting your arm over Helens shoulders.
“Holy shit.” Helen murmurs. “This is insane.”
“Clearly Helen needs some time to process this.” You chuckle. “I’ll call you when I get home, alright?”
“Alright.” Bucky says, smiling. “Bye, Doll! Bye, Helen!”
“Bye, Bucky.” You say, before hanging up.
“You’re married to Bucky Barnes.” Helen murmurs.
“I feel like that’s been established already.” You laugh.
“How is this even going to work?” Helen asks. “You have school!”
“For like another month.” You say, shrugging. “Once I’m done I’ll move to LA.”
“Where you’ll live happily ever after with Bucky freaking Barnes.”
“Exactly.” You say.
**1 week later**
“Are you happy to be home?” You ask, watching as Bucky unpacks his suitcase over skype.
“Yeah.” Bucky sighs. “I love touring, but being home is nice.”
“Show me around the apartment! I wanna see where I’m gonna live!”
“This isn’t where you’re gonna live.” Bucky says.
“What do you mean?” You ask. “I thought I was going to move in with you.”
“You are! But this isn’t where we’re gonna live. I bought us a house!”
“You didn’t have to do that.” You murmur.
“I know!” Bucky says, smiling. “I wanted to.”
“God you’re perfect.” You sigh.
“So are you, Doll.” Bucky says. “How’s school?”
“It’s good, I just submitted my thesis. I should hear back from the committee in about three weeks.”
“Have you gotten your plane ticket yet?” Bucky asks.
“Yep.” You say, nodding. “Can you text me the address of our house? I need to know where to mail all my stuff.”
“Of course.” Bucky says, smiling. “I like hearing you say that.”
“What?”
“Our house.” Bucky murmurs.
“God, you so cheesy! I kinda love it!”
“Glad to hear it.” Bucky chuckles. “Oh, I forgot to tell you, I added you to the list at Shield Records.”
“The list?” You ask.
“It means you’ll have access to the building, and me if I’m recording.” Bucky explains. “This way you can get ahold of me if something happens between now and when you get here.”
“Look at you, thinking of everything.” You say grinning. “Now tell me about your friends, you haven’t said much about them.”
“Alright.” Bucky says. “Stevie- he plays base- and I have known each other since we were kids. We played in a band called the Howling Commandos in college, but then the band broke up. He’s a punk, but also a total softy.”
“When did you guys join The Avengers?” You ask.
“We met Tony and Clint about a week after our old band broke up. Tony is the lead singer and Clint plays keyboard. Two weeks after that we met Thor and the rest is history.”
“Tell me about them, what are they like?”
“They’re-uh-they’re a lot. You’ll see what I mean when you meet them.” Bucky says.
“Okay.” You say, laughing. “Hey, I should probably go to bed, it’s almost 2 in the morning.”
“Alright, Doll. Call me tomorrow?”
“Of course.” You say, smiling. “Bye, Hubby.
“Bye, Wifey.” Bucky says, before ending the skype call.
**2 weeks later**
“Hey, Helen.” You say, sauntering into the lab. “How’s changing the world going?”
“I am not changing the world.” Helen murmurs, not looking up from her tablet.
“Sure, sure.” You say. “You’re just building a machine that will one day save millions of lives.”
“I need to get it to work first.” Helen grumbles. “Did you need something?”
“I’m done!” You say. “My thesis was approved a week early!”
“That’s amazing!” Helen says.
“I know!” You laugh, hugging your friend. “I’m done! I’m officially done with school!”
“Have you told Bucky yet?” Helen asks.
“No.” You say, shaking your head. “I kinda want to surprise him. Go to LA a week early, there’s a flight leaving tonight.”
“Will you be done packing by then?” Helen asks.
“Yeah, I just have to through my clothes into my suit case. But I still have a couple more boxes to ship-.”
“I can do that!” Helen says.
“Really?” You ask.
“Really.” Helen says, nodding. “But you have to promise me that you’ll invite me to come visit during the summer!”
“Of course!” You say. “I was gonna do that anyway.”
“You’re the best, best friend, Y/N!” Helen says.
“So are you!” You say, hugging Helen again.
“Now, go, pack! You have a flight to catch!”
“Thanks again!” You call over your shoulder, as you run out of the lab. But you stop at the door. “If I don’t see you before I leave I just wanted to tell you, that you’ve made these last 2 years amazing and that I’ll miss you.”
“I’ll miss you too.” Helen says. “Call me when you land in LA.”
“I will, promise.”
“Say Hi to your husband for me.” Helen says.
“I will.” You say, before finally leaving the lab. As you walk farther and farther away, the sadness you’re feeling starts to turn to excitement because this time tomorrow you’ll be in LA with Bucky.
Something New for Me and You
• (start) (prev) (next) (Read on AO3) •
Chapter 6: The Still-Hanging Spotlight
Yasha leaned against a stone column outside the front entrance, facing east and idly watching boats bob up and down along the Eistus River. The arrival of winter meant fishing season was over now, but the few brightly-colored vessels still on the nighttime waters left her with a sense of serene, floating ease.
And then suddenly, the doors burst open behind her. A wild stream of people poured out, all well-dressed but looking very harried, roughly shoving past each other and heading straight for the sidewalks. Strangely enough, there were also two tiny gnomes flanking the horde, shouting over the noise and doing their best to direct the flow as smoothly as possible.
Thanks to her formidable stature, Yasha was able to wade through this onslaught with relative ease. She caught fragments of frantic conversation as she moved—what on earth was that; I can’t believe it; horrifying, so horrifying; my lawyer will head of this; poor old Brinjay—and while none of it actually made any sense, all of it was extremely worrying.
“What happened?” she asked when she reached the entrance. “What’s going on?”
The gnome to her left, a tiny brown-haired man, spoke first.
“A guy in the audience went insane,” he explained. “Started writhing and screaming and attacking, it looked like he changed into some kind of monster! Is that something that happens, usually?”
“Knock it off, dear,” sighed the other gnome. “That’s not helpful. Miss, you should stay put,” she added, looking up at the massive woman next to her. “It’s not safe in there anymore.”
Yasha glanced through the doors, watched panicked guests tumble down the stairs.
She met the gnome’s concerned gaze and shook her head. “I cannot do that,” she said. “My friends are still in there. I need to go.”
And then she pushed a handful of guests aside, and headed in.
Caleb’s chair flew back as he leapt to his feet, the flames in his hands shedding a low orange glow over the tablecloth, over Jester’s frantic expression, over Nott’s wide and fearful eyes. With only the stage spotlight and the moon leaking in through cracks in the curtains to illuminate the area, he could barely make out anything worthwhile—just snatches of a lumbering silhouette behind the mad shifting of fleeing audience members. From what he could tell, whatever the man had become was massive. It stretched taller than any human could, was wide as a bear and made furious swipes with rake-like claws at anything and everything that moved.
Then it roared a low, wet, wretched roar.
“What is that thing?” Jester cried, whipping around to face him. “What the fuck?!”
“I-I don’t know!” he shouted back. “I’ve never seen anything like it before! We need to get out of here, it is too dangerous!”
“But what about the others?” she demanded. “What about Molly and the performers and everybody downstairs?”
Nott squinted, and pointed at the stage. “There are still people there too!” she said. “I think I see Desmond, the lizard-man, and…and Toya.”
Sure enough, perched twenty feet in the air on her small wooden platform, the little dwarf girl was now backing up, raising her hands and trembling. She spoke too quietly for anybody to hear, but her eyes were filled with terror and her shoulders quivered. And then suddenly, she took a step too wide, placed her foot too far, felt the wind rush past and saw the ground fly up to meet her—
“Kylre!” Desmond screamed, “catch her!”
A massive shape rose through the darkness. It glinted for just a moment in the moonlight, reached out its arms, and landed back onto the stage with a resounding thud.
“Thank the gods,” Desmond breathed as Kylre turned to him, cradling Toya in his grasp. “Quick, get her out of here, get yourselves somewhere safe. This isn’t going to end well, friend.”
The lizard-man immediately took off behind the curtains. Back down on the carpeted floor, Jester, Caleb, and Nott’s attention returned to the strange, rampaging creature. The area around it had cleared out as patrons ran away, and it had switched to crushing tables under its girth, throwing vases against the walls. It shattered a window with a chair and punched an ashen fist against the ground and then—only then—did it notice their trio: the only ones not moving to escape.
It gave that cry again, a mix of pitiful and terrifying. It advanced.
“Oh, shit,” said Nott, “oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, are we going to have to fight?”
Caleb glanced around wildly, saw the outline of a stampeding horde blocking the exits and a sea of debris blocking the stage. He looked down at his palms, still crackling and ablaze.
“Er,” he began, “I, fuck, I don’t—”
Jester cut him off. “Let’s goooo!” she yelled brightly. clapping her hands together. Immediately, snapping into reality before all of their eyes, came a giant, shimmering purple lollipop. It immediately swung into the creature’s head, eliciting a roar of anger. The monster clutched its skull in agony, then looked up and locked onto Jester.
“Whoops,” she said. Her arms were outstretched and glowing faintly. “I think maybe I just made it mad.”
Caleb prevented himself from anxiously combing his fingers through his hair and setting it on fire. He turned to Nott and asked, urgently, “Did you bring your spell components?”
She quickly nodded.
“Good,” he said. “Hurry, send a message downstairs to alert Fjord and Beau what is happening. We need them to evacuate people and send backup. We will not be able to fight this thing alone.”
“Alright, Caleb!” She shoved a fist into her coat, rummaged around, and yanked out a copper wire. And as she began murmuring the commands for a Message Spell, Caleb took a deep breath, pulled deep into himself to draw upon all the knowledge he still possessed. Suddenly, the air around them turned blistering and dry and a sphere of flame coalesced around his hands, grew scorching, and he sent three blasts of burning fire towards the grotesque creature as it roared and drew ever closer.
Despite being on the clock, Fjord eventually gave up on sobriety and joined Beau in having a small drink.
“It’s just been a shitty few days,” she muttered gloomily. “Something happened that really pissed me off.”
“Wanna tell me about it?” he asked. “I promise I won’t judge.”
She sighed. “It’s stupid. You’re gonna judge me anyways, but basically, yesterday in the mail I got—”
FJORD TOUGH—STOP—THIS IS NOTT—STOP—I HAVE AN URGENT MESSAGE—STOP—THINGS ARE FUCKED—STOP
Beau leaned over the counter and watched Fjord get up from the ground. He looked around in bewilderment and kicked a few shards of broken glass aside. A couple other curious bar patrons also glanced over, though they seemed too intoxicated to really care.
“Whoa there,” said Beau. “You good? You look like your bean just got freaked. Did you fall on any glass?”
He rubbed his temples. “Nah,” he muttered, “nah, I think I’m okay. Did you, uh, did you just…hear something?”
She raised an eyebrow. “Uh…no? Are you sure you’re okay?”
He sighed and gestured at the bottle on the table. “Maybe we should’ve picked something weaker to start with,” he shrugged. “Or maybe I’m more of a lightweight than I thought, because—”
FJORD TOUGH—STOP—THIS IS NOTT AGAIN—STOP—SOMETHING ATTACKED US—STOP—DURING THE SHOW—STOP—YOU NEED TO EVACUATE FLETCH—STOP—AND THEN COME UP AND HELP US—STOP—ALSO THIS IS PROBABLY NEW FOR YOU—STOP—IT’S A MAGIC SPELL—STOP—AND YOU CAN REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE—STOP
This time Beau punched him in the arm. “Seriously dude,” she said, “open your eyes, are you sure you’re g—”
“Something’s happened,” he frowned. “I…I’m not sure what exactly, but I just got a message from Nott, I think? She says there’s been an attack in the Moondrop. She says she wants us to get everybody out, down here.”
Beau’s eyes went wide. “What? Are you serious? Is…is she serious? How do you know it’s not a prank, or something?”
“I don’t,” he agreed, “but she sounded pretty urgent. And you know how thick the soundproofing is, something really could’ve happened and we wouldn’t’ve noticed. Maybe…maybe it’s better to be safe than sorry?”
She shook her head, and then shrugged. “Sure, whatever, man. What do we do?”
He glanced around. “I’m gonna to ask the customers to clear out,” he said. “I’ll need your help guiding them safely and making sure they don’t panic. Sound good?”
“Gotcha.”
“Okay,” Fjord said. “In that case—”
FJORD TOUGH—STOP—I NOTE THAT YOU DID NOT REPLY—STOP—ARE YOU OKAY—STOP—DO YOU REQUIRE ASSISTANCE—STOP—BECAUSE WE CAN’T REALLY GIVE YOU THAT NOW THINGS ARE SUPER BAD HERE—STOP—LIKE REALLY REALLY BAD—STOP—PLEASE HURRY—STOP—I’M NOT KIDDING—STOP—AND YOU CAN REPLY TO THIS—
“Yes, godsdammit, Nott!” he shouted at the ceiling. “I heard you, loud and clear! We’ll be up as soon. Is that alright?”
There were a few seconds of silence.
YEAH OKAY SURE
Fjord sighed and rubbed his forehead. Then he slid Beau’s drink aside and climbed up onto the counter.
“Ladies and gentlemen and other welcomed guests,” he called as calmly as possible, “excuse me, but I have an important announcement to make.”
When the crowd did not quiet down, Beau rolled her eyes, grabbed two bottles of liquor off the shelves, and smashed them as aggressively as she could against the floor. Everybody’s heads instantly turned towards her.
“Listen up!” She yelled. “Your bartender has something fuckin’ important to say! And if you all wanna live, then you’d better pay attention.”
Gustav lowered his tablet, which had suddenly gone dark, and tapped on his headset. “Hello?”
He glanced over at Ornna, Molly, and the Knot Sisters, standing around him behind the large curtains, securely offstage. They all shrugged.
“Desmond?” he tried. “Hello, Des? Your connection stopped, what was that scream? Is everything—”
Then there came a mighty roar, and muffled shouting. That would have been fine, almost expected given the scene, but then…then…
Kylre exploded through the curtains, Toya in his arms, followed closely behind Bosun and Desmond and a trail of chains clattering in their wake. He didn’t even stop—just barreled past the rest of the group and vanished down the hall.
There was a brief pause, punctuated by another scream from beyond the stage.
“What the fuck,” said Ornna. “What—”
“No time!” Desmond yelled, grabbing her by the shoulders. “Something’s attacking us! There was…there was…”
“Someone in the audience just turned into a fuckin’ monster of some kind,” Bosun said. His eyes were wide and his breath short. “We’ve gotta get out of here now, go hide somewhere or get to safety. Everyone’s running, Gustav, and we should do the same.”
Gustav’s eyes darted around. Molly could see a war tearing him apart—protect the Moondrop, or protect his troupe.
After a few seconds of turmoil he turned to them and nodded decisively. “Alright then,” he said quickly. “Okay. Everybody, to the back exit. Come on, come on, time to go.”
“I don’t see why you had to do that,” Fjord said as they pushed the last of the patrons onto the sidewalk and handed over control to Yan, the other bouncer. “Those were expensive bottles.”
“Cry me a river,” Beau huffed. “Besides, they were technically 25% off tonight.”
Fjord rolled his eyes and began heading up the outdoor stairs leading to the Moondrop. “So when you pay it back, you can pay it back cheaper.”
“Sure.” Beau rolled her eyes behind him. “Because I’ll definitely be paying for those.”
He nodded, ignoring her sarcasm. “Let’s see what it was that Nott was going on about now,” he said, reaching for his keys.
“I really hope that was worth it,” Beau muttered. “Otherwise we just ruined an entire bar’s evening, and those two bottles of liquor.”
Fjord tugged on the handle. “I can’t imagine it’s that—”
Typically, warm lighting and the cheerful hum of behind-the-scenes life would greet them past the open door. But now, instead, the lights were completely off. The air was tomb-silent and cold, save for a low and distant commotion somewhere beyond the main stage. And then came that long-off scream, and that hushed roar.
“Well fuck,” said Beau. “I guess...I guess that’s what she was talkin’ about, huh?”
“What the hell was that?” Fjord whispered. “Some kinda monster? Is that what we’re supposed to fight?”
“You’ve got magic, don’t you?” she returned. “You’re probably more equipped than I am for this kinda thing.”
He immediately shook his head. “No way. I barely know what I’m doing magic-wise. At least you can punch shit real hard. Didn’t you used to go to school with monks, or somethin’?”
Beau shrugged. “Yeah, maybe,” she said, “but I don’t really think that’s gonna help. This is fucked.”
They both stared down the hallway for a few moments. Then they turned back to one another.
“Runnin’ seems pretty good right now,” he admitted. “I’m not sure we could even help, in this situation.”
Beau nodded. “I like that plan. Maybe we can—”
Then there was another sound. Shrill, muffled by distance and barely audible, but what Fjord and Beau managed to catch was:
“EAT SHIT, YOU STUPID ZOMBIE THING!”
Their eyes immediately widened.
“Was that—”
“No way, is—”
“Aw fuck,” they both said at exactly the same time.
Fjord ran a hand through his hair, and Beau shook her head.
“So…we’re going in, then,” she said. It wasn’t a question.
“Yeah,” Fjord said. “Yeah. Let’s…let’s…fuck it, man. Just...just fuck it.”
Molly’s head whipped around towards the stage. From where they stood he could only make out a tiny sliver of the performance hall beyond, shrouded in darkness, with occasional flickers of movement. Unfortunately, there was nothing to indicate whether or not—
“But it sounded exactly like Jester,” he said with a frown. “Fuck, I have to—”
Gustav grabbed his wrist and shook his head. The other members of their troupe were already fleeing down the hall.
“We need to get out of here,” he said urgently.
“Are you kidding me?” Molly hissed back. “There’s something loose in our home and I think, gods, I think my friends are fighting it now!”
“But what could you possibly do?” Gustav pressed. “Please, Mollymauk, please, come with the rest of us. Don’t worry about the bar, worry about yourself.”
Molly looked over his shoulder, heard a distant whoosh of air, a heavy impact, and more panicked screams. He glanced down at his sides, where two prop scimitars were strapped against his hips. He met Gustav’s worried gaze.
“I’m going out there,” he said firmly. “I can’t just sit back and—”
And then Beau and Fjord rounded the corner, out of breath and looking determined. They came to a halt just in front of Molly and Gustav. For a second, both pairs just stared at each other.
Beau spoke first. “We’re, uh, here,” she said. “To help.”
“Nott says something is out there attacking audience members,” Fjord explained. “And right now she and Jes and Caleb are tryin’ to fight it. We’re, well, I guess we’re also—”
Molly immediately held up a hand, and they paused. “You’re coming to fight too?” he asked.
Beau and Fjord exchanged glances.
“Uh…” Fjord said, “I guess?”
Molly nodded. He unsheathed one of his swords, which wobbled slightly as it moved through the air. But his grip was resolute. He took a deep breath and looked at Gustav once more.
“I’m going.” His voice was soft. “Please,” he added.
Gustav’s shoulders relaxed just slightly as he gave in. “Okay,” he said. “Alright. But…but be safe, son.”
Molly gave him a small smile. Then he raised an eyebrow at Beau and Fjord. “Well then?” he asked. “Are we getting in there, or what?”
In the corner of his vision, under the glow of the still-hanging spotlight, Caleb saw three shapes emerge from backstage. One was lithe, one slightly stockier, and one with large, curling horns.
“Oh good!” he called, calling more fire from nothing. “The cavalry is here now!”
“Took you long enough!” Nott screamed. She had produced a crossbow from…from somewhere, and was crouched behind an overturned table for cover. Her eyes, though still light blue and disguised, were manic with anxiousness and adrenaline. “Fjord, you suck at replying!”
“Talk later!” Jester yelled, and punched her fist, and her spectral lollipop swept down to bludgeon the creature. “Fight now!”
Beau immediately leapt off the stage, grabbed a fallen chair, screamed as she barreled towards her target. Fjord stayed in place, either immobile from fear or taking a moment to assess the situation. Apparently it was the latter, because after a few seconds he thrust his hands out and murmured a few strange words and a cold green blast of energy flung outwards, rocketed through the air and collided with the monster’s skull. Caleb was so distracted by this peculiar arcane display—what was that, it didn’t look like a normal spell—that he almost didn’t notice the other flash of light just under the stage.
Mollymauk had jumped off as well, was now advancing with two scimitars in his hands. One was surrounded by a bright, radiant glow that illuminated the second blade, which was coated in a thin layer of hard, crackling ice.
Well okay then, Caleb thought. Perhaps he was not the only one with a strange and magical past.
Part of him almost wanted to laugh at how familiar this all felt, taking something down with a group at his side, reveling in the heat that left his fingers and admiring the skills of his friends. But then the creature roared again, and his attention snapped back to the battle.
Now, under the fury of the group’s assault, it was beginning to look rough. Blasts of green light exploded against its ashy hide, pockmarked with crossbow bolts and lollipop-dents and slashes from Molly’s swords, singed and sporting chair splinters like porcupine quills, that were scattered along its unnatural, protruding skeleton. Its malformed head whipped around violently, overwhelmed by the relentless onslaught and unable to focus on one target. Its body jerked, spasmed, and with no other options something inside it, deep and buried and survival-driven, took control.
Its instincts said: run away.
It saw the grand door leading outside, where the last of the guests had just vanished out of sight.
It saw a direct path, littered with broken furniture and bent silverware.
And then it saw Beau step in the way, advancing with half a table swinging in her grasp.
Another flash of fire exploded across its back, it felt the wind of a downward scimitar-strike and it roared again, made up its mind, started to flee. It barreled towards Beauregard and then her eyes immediately went wide with panic and terror, as the realization sunk in that she wouldn’t be able to escape before it hit, that she wouldn’t have time to dodge, that all she could do was brace herself and tuck in her elbows and hope that its jagged spikes wouldn’t tear her to bits—
—and just as she was about to be bulldozed over, another massive shape burst past her in a flurry of feathers, screaming a deep, enraged cry. It tackled the monster at gut-height, and Molly just barely danced out of the way as Yasha and the creature went soaring ten feet back, her shoulder buried in its stomach and her eyes glowing in the darkness.
They collided with the floor. Yasha on top, the monster beneath her dragging a disgusting trail of ash and slime and shards of bone against the wood.
They both came to a stop. For a moment or two, the creature just lay there and gurgled faintly.
And then it went still. And silent.
Yasha stood up and tried to wipe the ooze off her shawl. It sort of worked.
“Is that what everybody was running from?” she asked calmly, and prodded the grotesque, grey slough on the ground with her boot. “Are we done, then?”
They all stared at her. Beau had stars in her eyes. Fjord sighed, and started making his way down from the stage.
Then the house lights came to life. Four Crownsguard in full riot gear burst into the performance hall, trailed by a dwarf woman in jeans and a leather jacket.
They all looked at the dead monster. They looked at the motley crew of guests and employees standing around it. Everybody just sort of stood there for a few long, quiet seconds.
“Well then,” the woman said eventually, gesturing to the creature lying at Yasha’s feet. “I see you all have taken care of the immediate threat. I’ll remember that, in case we end up arresting you.”
And then, before anybody could say another word, she turned around and stuck her head back out the doorway. “Grenn!” She shouted. “Go tell the posh folk to go home! And get me those performers from out back. I think it’s time we all had a little chat.”
And then, she faced their group again and crossed her arms. As she shifted, her jacket nudged to the side and revealed a silver chain hanging around her neck, ending in a gold badge shaped like a shield. It shone in the light, before vanishing again back under her clothing.
“I’m Detective-Sergeant Norda,” she said. “Find me some chairs that aren’t broken, will you? This could take a while, and I’d like to sit down.”
“No way,” said Molly, shooting to his feet. “You can’t do that.”
“Mollymauk,” Gustav said firmly, “don’t argue this.”
“But he’s innocent!” Molly said. “I know he is, he—”
“And where’s your proof?” Norda demanded. “How do you know?”
They were all gathered at the far left of the hall now, clustered around one of the only undamaged tables remaining. Norda leaned forwards on her elbows, glaring at the group amassed before her. Gustav and most of the troupe were seated, Molly angrily pounding a fist against the tablecloth, Yasha standing in the back with her arms crossed next to Bosun and the non-Moondrop stragglers. Nott had ducked behind Caleb and emerged a moment later with a fresh Disguise Self, and Jester was scribbling away in a notebook she had produced from her purse. Six more Crownsguard had also entered the building, four splitting off to investigate and dispose of the creature, the other two joining the rest in unsubtly watching over the proceedings.
It was unnerving, to be sure.
Norda shook her head at Molly. “I appreciate your loyalty to your employer,” she said coolly, “but I would more appreciate it if you would calm down. You’re lucky I’m letting you all off.”
“You saw the security footage,” Beau said. “You have to.”
“I don’t have to do shit, kid,” Norda said immediately. “Especially not what you tell me to do. My decision is final, based on what I’ve seen and what I’ve been told. I’m taking Mr. Fletching here, noting his cooperation in the matter, and I’ll release him once we get indisputable evidence of his innocence. And all of you are on thin fucking ice, too. Right now you’re in the peaceful waters of my good graces. Ensure that you stay that way. You performers, depending on how this goes, we may need to question you. So don’t even think about leaving this city tonight.”
She leaned back and sighed. “Go get your things and go home, alright? Hurry up, so you don’t look too suspicious. If we see anything out of place, that turns up in your possession, I’ll drag you to jail myself. We’ll update you further as things develop.”
She gave a short nod and pushed her chair back. “Good evening,” she said. “Thank you for your cooperation.”
She stood up, waved a hand at her officers, and turned around. They all scrambled to follow her, leading Gustav along with them as they did.
And then a minute later, they were all gone.
In the ensuing quiet, Molly put his forehead against the tabletop. Nobody spoke for a bit.
Then Desmond sighed and put a hand on the tiefling’s back. “It’ll be okay,” he said. “Gustav’s innocent, they’ll see that and then let him go.”
Bosun scoffed. “Will they?” he asked. “Are you sure? A man died tonight, they’re going to want someone to blame.”
“What if...what if Gustav is guilty?” Ornna asked, and quickly raised her hands when a number of outraged faces swiveled towards her. “I’m just saying,” she sighed. “We all love him, yeah, but...it’s possible. It’s not like he tells us everything, and sometimes he can be a little shady.”
“We’re all shady,” Molly grumbled through the tablecloth. “That’s what makes us so delightful.”
“It is also why the law does not like us,” Yasha reminded him gently.
“Gustav had to work damn hard to get the money and respect he needed to run this place,” Yuli agreed. “We all did.”
“And now it’s gone,” Desmond nodded. “Or, at least, it seems like it. But we can’t let this break us apart, right? We all need each other more than ever, now. We need to stick together.”
Beau cleared her throat. “Speaking of sticking together,” she said, “uh...wasn’t there another one of you in the troupe? Giant and scaly, carried around a dwarf kid, answers to the name of ‘Kylre’ and ran off just after the fight started?”
There was a moment’s pause.
“He was trying to keep Toya safe,” said Ornna slowly. “I think he went to hide backstage, right?”
“He wasn’t outside with the rest of us,” Mona said, “so he must still be there.”
Fjord shrugged. “Beau and I ran through a few rooms on the way to the fight,” he said, “but I didn’t see ‘im. Though he could’ve hunkered down somewhere out of sight,” he added.
“We could go look for him and Toya and tell them the coast is clear, if you’d like?” Jester volunteered. “So you all can get your things.”
“That would be...very kind of you,” Bosun said. “If you all aren’t opposed…?”
Nott opened her mouth and Jester immediately kicked her in the leg. “Not a problem at all! It’s the least we can do.”
Molly stood up and sighed. “I’ll come with you,” he said. “You’ll probably need someone to make sure you don’t get lost, and to talk to them once we find them.”
“I will come also,” said Yasha. “I do not have any things here to retrieve.”
“C’mon then, you guys,” Molly said, waving the group on forwards. “The sooner we find them, the better, probably.”
“Okay,” said Fjord as he and Jester returned to the green room. “I swear, we searched our area a thousand times up and down, and nothing. Not even a smidge of slime or a strand of blonde hair.”
Molly rubbed his face and shook his head. He was pacing across the carpet now, the rest of the group sitting on the couch and watching him with expressions ranging from concern (Yasha, Jester, Fjord, Caleb) to amusement (Nott and Beau).
“I don’t get it,” he said. “It’s not like they should be hard to spot. For the gods’ sake, Kylre is probably eight feet tall.”
“Probably more,” said Jester. “He’s super big.”
“Right, sure,” Molly conceded. “But my point is, I don’t think we would have overlooked him if he was still in here. So the question is—”
“Where did he go?!” Nott jumped up. “That’s what you were going to say, eh?”
He raised an eyebrow. “Well, yes.”
“Hell yes!” Nott punched a fist into the air. “This means that we’ve got a mystery on our hands! And you know what that means!”
Jester immediately shoved Fjord to the side and ran over to stand next to Nott. “It means that Brave and Lavore are on the case! There’s no puzzle we can’t uncover, no crime we can’t decipher, no code we can’t solve!”
Beau frowned. “Shouldn’t it be ‘solve’ for the puzzle, ‘decipher’ for the code, and ‘uncover’ for the crime?”
Nott shrugged. “We’re open to constructive criticism,” she said, “but not right now. Right now, we’re on the case! Mollymauk, when was the last time you saw this Kylre of yours?”
Molly rolled his eyes. “Onstage, Nott. Where else?”
She nodded slowly. “I see…I see…well then, what was he doing when you saw him?”
Molly shook his head. “He was running away. Gods, is this really going to help?”
Jester immediately nodded. “Definitely,” she said. “It’s a practiced art, detective-ing.”
“I am a very big fan of you both,” Caleb said carefully, “but are you sure that this is the best way to go about searching for them? I feel like this has something to do with the Labenda Mysteries series we watched last week. Not to cast aspersions.”
“I don’t know that spell,” Nott said, “so I couldn’t even if I wanted to.”
As Beau had a small fit in the background and Yasha clapped her on the back, the others returned to the situation at hand.
“I guess we could look around in the alleys and stuff,” Molly suggested with a shrug.
“Do they live around here?” Jester asked. “They could have just gone home.”
Yasha shook her head. “They both reside in the Moondrop,” she said. “In an old dressing room. It is...difficult for folks like them to find apartments and such in a city like this.”
Nott gave a glum nod of understanding.
Caleb tapped his chin slowly. “Perhaps this is a silly idea,” he said, “but I could send Frumpkin out to skitter around the rooftops, see if he can see anything outside from above. Maybe they did leave, and just went to hide somewhere.”
Fjord nodded. “Sounds like a good idea to me,” he said. “In the meantime, we can make our way out too and take a look around. I don’t want to be in here for too much longer, to avoid drawin’ suspicion from the authorities.”
“You mean the sheriff?” Nott asked immediately.
Fjord gave her a puzzled frown. “No? I’m pretty sure she said she was a Detective-Sergeant.”
Beau coughed a few times. “Can we just go?” she asked. “Before I literally have an aneurysm.”
“I will need someone to hold my hand,” Caleb said. “And guide me. When I look into Frumpkin’s eyes, I cannot see or hear.”
Jester instantly volunteered. “Ooh, ooh, I can do it!” she cried. “I love holding people’s hands.”
Molly gave her a small smile. “Great,” he said. “Now we have the affectionate leading the deaf and blind.”
“This is kind of freaky,” Fjord said. “Is it always like this?”
“Probably?” Nott guessed. “He doesn’t really do it that much, but it has been so far.”
“It looks like we can almost see what Frumpkin is seeing also,” Yasha noted. “Flashing in his eyes.”
They were all outside now, standing just under the alley stairs that led up to the Moondrop. At this point, the city had completely melted into night, dark clouds overhead and the flicker of streetlamps all around them. Cars still inched along the roads out front but back here, behind the building, it was relatively quiet. The far-off sound of a flowing river leaked past the brick and concrete around them. Light snowfall was beginning to drift down, and they all pulled their jackets in tighter except for Caleb, who was distracted, and Jester, who didn’t seem to mind.
“Do you see anything yet?” she asked the wizard. “Have you found them?”
There was no response.
“He can’t hear you,” Beau said with a tone that suggested this was her fourth reminder in the last ten minutes.
“Let’s just wait, dear,” Molly said gently. “I’m sure the moment he does get something, he’ll let us know.”
“It’s really cold out here,” Nott grumbled.
“You should put on a coat then,” Jester said. “So that you don’t get sick.”
“I’m wearing a coat,” Nott sighed. “It’s just under my gnome disguise.”
“You know,” Fjord nodded, “I was gonna ask about that.”
“I’m magic. Not as magic as Caleb, but still magic.”
“Got any spells for makin’ fire, then?” he asked conversationally. “Somethin’ to keep you warm?”
“No. I wish I did, though, ‘cause I hate this. It never got so cold where I used to live.”
“Oh? Where was that?”
“Felderwin. South.”
Fjord smiled. “Hey, me too! Southwest, but still south.”
“Really?” Nott asked. “Were there goblins where you were? ‘Cause if yes, then—”
Caleb suddenly thrust a hand forward and grabbed blindly at the first thing in front of him, which was Yasha’s shawl, and tugged urgently. “I see something,” he said. “Something very large. A...a shadow, of some kind. It just ducked into the building, and the door is very loud behind it.”
“What kind of building?” Jester asked. “What kind of shadow?”
“He still can’t hear you,” Beau moaned.
“It is gone now,” Caleb sighed. He was still staring off into the distance. “But it was quite large. Large enough to be Kylre, I think. And Frumpkin is only a block or two away, so it is not impossible that our missing friends took off a short distance, just to be safe.”
Then he blinked, and shook his head, and the light faded from his eyes. They were back to their usual, non-glowing blue. He blushed faintly and released Yasha’s shawl.
“Sorry,” he said. “I got nervous.”
She shook her head. “It is fine. Now say again, where was this?”
“And what kind of building?” Jester demanded again. “Like a restaurant, or an apartment building, or a shoe store, or a bookstore, or a jewelry store, or a candy store, or a—”
“I am not entirely sure,” Caleb sighed before they could lose their minds any further. “It was very large, though, and wide, and right along the water. In the marina.”
Fjord rubbed his chin. “Is it a shipping warehouse?” he asked. “I think that’d be the most likely.”
Caleb shrugged. “Perhaps?”
“Can you lead us there?” Beau asked. “Do you remember where it is?”
“Caleb has a perfect memory!” Nott said immediately. “He remembers where everything is.”
“Really?” Molly asked. “Fascinating.”
Caleb rubbed the back of his neck. “That description is not entirely true,” he said, “but it is sufficient in this specific case. Come on, everybody. I can take us there.”
They took off at a decent walking pace, mildly bantering the whole way as Caleb led them down two blocks and through a few alleys, following the path of a tiny cat fifty feet in the air as best as they could on foot. Eventually, after untangling Molly’s scarlet costume coat from the broken corner of a dumpster and waiting for Beau to scrape the gum on her shoe off against a brick wall, they arrived at the opening to the streets. And the sidewalks, and the iron gates leading to the docks. They crossed, avoided a lone driver, and walked up to the gate.
It was chained shut, and locked for the night.
“How do we get in?” Jester asked. “You can’t turn us all into cats or magic the fence open, can you?”
That last part was directed at Caleb, who shook his head. “I cannot do the cats thing,” he said. “And I already used up quite a bit of magic during our fight with the strange grey creature.”
“That’s a weird thing to call it,” Beau said.
“Was? Why?”
She shrugged. “Well, I mean, ‘grey’ wasn’t really a defining feature, you know? I was more worried about the jagged bony spikes and horrible glowing eyes and the fact that it had no skin.”
“Tomayto, tomahto.”
“No, I really don’t think that—”
There was a faint click. They both looked down.
Nott was kneeling on the ground, holding the large rusted lock in one of her hands. In the other, some sort of thin metal tool. There was small piece of black canvas next to her leg on the sidewalk, with more tools on it.
Caleb immediately smiled. “Excellent job, spatz,” he said, and leaned down to ruffle her hair.
“Aw, it was nothing,” she grinned back. “Shall we go?”
Beau threw her hands up into the air in a why-the-hell-not gesture. Fjord looked at Molly, who shrugged.
Fjord turned back to Nott. “What the hell?” he asked. “How did...what was...where were you keeping those?”
“She also has a crossbow,” Jester said helpfully.
“Where?” Molly asked.
Nott snorted. “This is an illusion, remember? I’m wearing a whole belt of stuff over my real dress. And a hoodie. It’s cold out.”
“So you said, earlier.”
“Come on now,” Caleb sighed, pushing the fence open. “So that after this, we can go home and get somewhere warm.”
They all slipped through, and entered the Eistus Marina.
It was essentially a long series of docks and wharfs, connected by walkways over the water and framed with warehouses and smaller shacks. Boats bobbed up and down along the river, and the moon was low overhead through the clouds. The snow had caught up to them now, blanketing the wooden planks under their feet in a faint white dusting.
“That way,” Caleb said, pointing to their right. “That is where Frumpkin saw the shape.”
They followed his path down the main dock, and stopped in front of massive building with a flat roof, tiny windows high up, and a rusted sign with a picture of a flying bird out front. Its doors were styled like a garage’s, one massive sheet of metal lifted up from the bottom.
It was slightly dented, and hung about an inch off the ground.
“This is it,” Caleb said. “He went in through there.”
Fjord nodded slowly. “It is a shipping warehouse,” he said. “That bird, it’s the wandering albatross. It’s the symbol of the Menagerie Merchant Company.
“How do you know that?” Nott asked.
He shrugged. “I used to work for ‘em. C’mon, Yasha, wanna give me a hand getting through?”
She nodded, and followed him to the front.
“Alright,” he said, crouching down. “This could be heavy. It always took a few of us to do, so if we can’t get it to work on the first try, then—”
Yasha leaned over, grabbed the handle with both hands, and with a mighty heave, yanked. The door rattled at first, then shook, then screamed a song of grinding rust and metal until it rested just above her head.
She turned and looked at the rest. The stars were back in Beau’s eyes. Jester clapped.
Fjord stood up, and dusted his legs off. “Well alright then,” he said with only mild embarrassment. “In that case...uh...after y—”
Something shot out of the darkness, something thick and pink and slimy and long, and immediately wrapped itself around Fjord’s waist.
There was a split second where all of them just stared at it, Fjord looking down and saying, “What the f—”
And then he was yanked under the door, shouting all the while and completely, appropriately, bewildered and afraid.
Molly recovered first, immediately shooting below Yasha’s arm and screaming, “Kylre! Kylre, it’s us, it’s us! Stop it, let him go!”
The rest watched him vanish.
They all stared at one another and waited for their brains to process what had just happened.
Then they scrambled to follow him inside, all ducking under one by one.
The warehouse was enormous, filled with crates and boxes and stacks and stacks of random merchandise all waiting to be shipped away or picked up in the morning. It was quite hard to see inside, given the lack of any electrical lighting and only the moon filtering in through tiny windows high above. Fortunately, most of the group wasn’t too inhibited by this—Caleb and Beau were the only ones struggling to see.
Of course, they didn’t need really darkvision to notice Fjord; he was still screaming and pounding against the slick, scaly hide of Kylre as he stood atop a mountain of metal containers. He had the thrashing half-orc in one hand, tongue now freed, and was staring down with gleaming red eyes to where they all stood at the entrance of the storage complex, door whining down behind them.
“Get out!” he bellowed. “Take your friend and go.” He thrust Fjord forwards in his large webbed hand like a child’s toy. The half-orc glared, and stopped yelling.
“Of course,” Molly said slowly, “of course we will. But you’re coming too, right?”
Kylre’s eyes glittered. “No,” he said. His voice was a low tremor. “I will leave.”
Yasha’s brow furrowed as she glanced around them. “Where...where is Toya?” she asked.
“Coming with me,” Kylre said. “We are leaving together.”
“Now, hang on a moment,” Molly said.. His voice was still cautious, but a sharp edge was beginning to creep in. “Why the sudden decision to run off? And why take Toya with you?”
The lizard-man shifted slightly. The crate underneath him quivered. “Danger,” he said. “We are in danger.”
“Now, that just ain’t true,” Fjord said. “Not you, anyways.”
“There is no more danger,” Caleb called. “We destroyed the monster.”
Kylre shifted again. This time his beady eyes narrowed. “Destroyed? You destroyed?”
“Yes,” Caleb said. “So there is no need to worry.”
Now Kylre was backing up, his head darting around and gaze lingering on the windows, on the large door behind the group. “There is need,” he rumbled. “There is great need. I will go now, take your friend, I will go now, and run away, take Toya—”
“Excuse me,” Fjord said, “excuse me, I’m still in your hands—”
“You can’t just take her,” Beau yelled. “She belongs with us.”
“I will take her,” Kylre repeated. His tone was growing more and more agitated, his motions more frantic. “I will take her, and I will go, and you all will leave us—”
“I sure would like to!” Fjord said very loudly. His feet were dragging against the top of the crate.
“Kylre, Kylre, please,” Molly said gently with a worried look at Fjord. “Please, let’s just talk about this calmly. Can we do that? We are friends, after all, yes?”
There was a pause. Caleb felt his heart retreat into his stomach as he heard the achingly familiar call of a Friends spell.
And then his stomach fell as he saw Kylre begin to nod, begin to settle, then suddenly jerk his head forwards and shake his whole body as he realized what had happened, as he swiveled his gaze to lock onto Molly and open his massive maw and roar, “NO. WE ARE NOT.”
Molly’s eyes went wide with confusion. And then they went wider, because Kylre drew back the fist that was clenching Fjord and with a terrible thrust, launched the half-orc across the room and directly into the opposite wall, where he impacted with a sickening crunch.
Many things happened at once. Kylre began backing up, tensing to leap away as pure instinct took over. Nott whipped her crossbow out of its invisible hiding spot and trained it on the lizard-man. Beau balled her fists up and Yasha’s stance went aggressive and Caleb started preparing himself to hide behind the nearest large object. But over all of that, in the shocked silence, as Fjord tumbled down the wall and crumbled against the ground, Jester saw, and watched, and eyes went wide.
Then she screamed. It was not with fear, or grief, or shock.
It was with rage. Absolute, pure and unfiltered fury.
A bolt of holy fire slammed down from the heavens and blasted into Kylre, enveloping him in searing white flame. The crate beneath him exploded into shrapnel. Jester immediately spun around, darted over to Fjord’s side. Molly re-drew his two scimitars and Caleb, with nothing else left to do, set his hands ablaze.
And then they all froze, as the faint sound of someone singing spun into the air.
Caleb felt the music creep along his ear, sneak through his iron-like paranoia and caress his cheeks. It was a warm sound, that felt like the sunlight through the trees or the feeling of a cat purring under his hands. Despite the tense scene before him, he suddenly wanted to lie down, to close his eyes, to relax and just drink in this warm song. All around him, he saw the others do the same, pause in their movements and sway with the melody. Even Jester, who was bent over Fjord’s quiet body and pouring healing magic into his chest, hesitated.
Suddenly, something else happened. The song abruptly turned sour, turned angry, and Caleb felt a horrible discordant note slam into his skull. It stabbed into his mind and twisted hard, dragged out dusty pictures that he had tried to bury, images of a pair of warm smiles, of a fields of endless grain, of a cold hand and icy pride and quiet night and the sharp hiss of straw catching fire—
—it was almost too much. He almost collapsed on the spot. But something else was running through his hearing now, something deeper than these memories and carved into his bones. It was a voice. It was familiar. It said:
Concentrate. This is not real. This is all in the mind, and the mind is a mage’s greatest weapon.
Caleb shrugged off the terror threatening to swallow him. He saw that the rest had too, in their own way somehow, and were shaking their heads, clearing their minds, pushing off the sound of the music—though he noticed that Beau looked worst of them all.
And then Kylre stood. He looked somewhat singed, and the debris around him glowed from Jester’s fire. He looked up at the windows, within reach but too small to fit through. His gaze turned to the only other exit in the warehouse, a large metal door currently being blocked by two humans, a goblin, and his former coworkers.
He made a choice. He leapt forward, broad, muscular arms swinging out in a desperate, enraged attack.
And he met Yasha and Beau, both ready with a flurry of blows, Yasha’s slow but powerful and Beau making sharp, rapid jabs. Molly, despite having his swords at the ready, seemed too reluctant to actually make any swipes, instead started shouting at Kylre with harsh, guttural words. Nott had no such reservations, instead scrambling onto a crate and beginning to fire as many bolts as she could. And sighing, with nothing else to do, Caleb pointed a finger at Kylre and sent a spout of flame in the lizard-man’s direction, doing his best not to burn any of his friends.
For the second time in only a few hours, the group came together. They weren’t actually going for a kill this time—Kylre was Molly and Yasha’s friend, for the gods’ sake. But as the lizard-man made his intentions clear, that he would do his best to eliminate every single one of them and flee, they cracked down. Caleb’s spells missed more often than not now, left with only cantrips, and Beau didn’t have the advantage of table-pieces to use as weapons, but they were still a formidable bunch.
The only problem was the singing. Every few seconds, they had to pause and clap their hands against their ears, wincing with pain. It was impossible to avoid, and Kylre would manage to land a rough strike whenever Beau or Yasha or Molly heard the song.
Then, out of the corner of his eye, Caleb saw a tiny shape huddled behind one of the crates. It was Toya, crouched in a pool of moonlight, trembling as she sang.
Caleb believed he was a loyal friend to Nott. He believed he was a decent companion for Frumpkin.
But he also believed, over everything else, that he was a complete and utter piece of trash.
“Beauregard!” he yelled, pointing at Toya’s tiny figure. “Make her stop! End the song!”
Beau, bless her heart, only needed a second to understand. “Got it!” she yelled. She immediately broke away from the melee, leapt over crates and pushed boxes aside and launched herself at the little dwarf girl, who immediately yelped with terror and tried to back away. But Beau was too fast, and succeeded in pinning her to the ground.
She was screaming her song now, tears spilling down her cheeks, and Beau looked back at Caleb in confusion. “What do I do?!” she yelled.
“Scheiss, Beau, just knock her out!”
Beau seemed more puzzled than anything else. Then she just shook her head, wound her fist back, and hit Toya in the head.
The child went limp.
And with that, and a final, brutal strike from Yasha’s elbow against his skull, Kylre went down with a mighty thump and the battle ended.
“Ow,” said Fjord in the resounding silence, and struggled to sit up. He winced, and put a hand against his side. “Fuck,” he added.
Molly lowered his swords. They were glowing and icy again, but as he relaxed his shoulders the light faded and the ice started to melt away.
“How are you feeling, there?” he called. His voice was strained, and couldn’t seem to make himself look away from Kylre’s fallen form.
“Alright, I think?” Fjord said. “But I also think my ribs are broken.”
“They were broken,” Jester informed him. “Now they are just bruised.”
“Well then,” he said. “Uh...thanks.”
“You’re welcome.”
Beau stood up also, a small blonde girl in her arms. “I’ve got a kid,” she said. “I mean, uh, the kid.”
“Great,” Molly said. “This is...a situation.”
Nott climbed down from her crate and made her way over, Beau doing the same and carrying Toya. Caleb sighed, and his hands went out.
“Now what?” he asked. “What do we do about...all this?”
“We’re gonna have to move him somehow,” Fjord said. “People might come here in the morning.”
“Agreed,” Molly said. “I just don’t understand...why would he attack us like that? Why would he do that? We’re friends!”
“Apparently not as good of friends as you thought,” Yasha said. “I think—”
In the distance, soft but growing louder, a high-pitched wail.
Police sirens.
They all looked at each other.
“Was that a—”
“Fuck, what do—”
“No way, could—”
“Gods, this is—”
Fjord, with Jester’s help, managed to stand. “We gotta get out of here,” he said. “Now.”
“I agree,” Beau said immediately. “I don’t wanna be around for any cops.”
“But what about Kylre?” Molly asked. “We can’t drag him, and they won’t react well to seeing him here.”
“There is nothing else we can do,” Yasha said gently. “And he attacked us. And tried to kidnap Toya.”
“They were friends, though,” Jester said quietly. “I think he really was trying to help her.”
The sirens were getting closer.
“We need to go now,” Fjord said. “We gotta leave him behind.”
“Fuck!” Molly yelled. “I don’t...I can’t...he was my friend!”
Caleb put a hand on his shoulder.
“There is nothing we can do for him,” he said firmly. “And he attacked us first. We have to go.”
“Where can we hide?” Nott asked.
Fjord spoke first. “Molly and I live not too far from here,” he said. “If we can slip outta this marina, we can hole up in our place until everything calms down.”
They all considered Kylre’s unconscious form. They all looked at Molly.
“Fine,” he said angrily. “Fucking...fucking fine.” he sighed, and shook his head. “Come on, then,” he nodded to the group. “Let’s...let’s just go.”
Pone Reviews 108: A Rockhoof and a Hard Place
Happy Day-Before-School-For-Me and welcome to Pone Reviews! It's been a while since America has aired an episode that got me thinking. This is one of them. In my opinion, it's the deepest episode of the season. Yes, what could beat "Surf and/or Turf" and "The Hearth's Warming Club?" You're about to find out as I take a look at "A Rockhoof and a Hard Place!"
Starting with the moral as usual, though I'm not gonna ease into the deep stuff. Nope, I'm going full force right off the bat. "Everybody has something to offer, and your experience can influence other things - you may not feel like you belong, but your friends feel like you do." Um, how do I put this lightly? ROCKHOOF WAS SUICIDAL, GUYS. HE THOUGHT HE'D BE BETTER OFF BASICALLY DEAD THAN WORKING IN THE MODERN WORLD. HE WAS ASKING TWILIGHT TO HELP HIM WITH HIS ASSISTED SUICIDE. (You know, for kids!) Poor, poor Rockhoof. Even if you don’t think so, you DO have something to offer the world. Everyone is good at something! You just need to find your calling (even if it’s 1,000 years in the making!). If you feel dejected and can’t seem to find something you’re happy with (a la Zephyr Breeze), look to your friends and other loved ones. They think you belong and that you could do so much. With mental health becoming such a hot button issue, I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what the writers had in mind for this ep. If you’re feeling like Rockhoof, please, PLEASE don’t give up. I promise it gets better. Talk to someone you know and love. They can help you. You too can find your position like Rockhoof, Keeper of Tales.
Onto the plot. Now that the Pillars are living in modern-day Equestria, they’ve all found new jobs... except Rockhoof. His shoveling gig didn’t work out, so what now? I feel like Rockhoof got the least attention out of all the Pillars in “Shadow Play.” He spoke so little that I couldn’t figure out what his accent was until this episode. Now he’s getting the attention he deserves. He’s a great character! He’s an actual pony viking and has great hair. I’m admittedly surprised he didn’t end up with some construction job or another profession involving his shovel, but then again I can see where the other Pillars aren’t using their signature items in their new lives. I love the message Rockhoof sends to viewers, too: Big guys can be vulnerable, too. “Dragonshy” and “The Last Roundup” showed this a little bit with the aforementioned dragon and Big Mac, but in those cases, it wasn’t a huge driving point for the episodes. Rockhoof is just like us in a way. He wants to belong and do the right thing. I love his interactions with Yona and with his old Pillar friends. Just like how you can find your place as a Keeper of Tales, you can be a Rockhoof by allowing yourself to feel things like vulnerability and sadness. (I told you this episode was really deep!)
Here are some other things that stood out in this episode: *HOLY SHIT YONA’S CUTENESS METER WAS IN OVERDRIVE! Everything she did in this episode was awesome and adorable! Not to mention her little garden spade to go with Rockhoof’s shovel! I NEED A YONA PLUSHIE *I love all the things the other Pillars are doing now! I figured Mage Meadowbrook would somehow be doing medicinal stuff in her swamp, but I didn’t expect any of the others. Now I want them to recreate Stygian’s books just like they did with some of the Daring Do stories. *HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA BULK BICEPS SCREAMING LIKE THAT *There’s that princess power being exerted! Why can’t we get more diplomatic or “diplomatic” decisions from Twilight? *I spy with my little eye Cattail in one of the shots of Meadowbrook’s home! Wonder what that reunion was like. ‘Sup, I’m just your long lost descendant that returned from limbo. How are things with you? *Rockhoof really is a sweetie. His actions may have caused more trouble than good in the end, but his heart was in the right place. I think that’s best shown when he literally brings Zecora a whole beehive because he thought it’d be convenient. *Blink and you’ll miss it, but when Yona pushes Gallus, he makes a rooster noise. “Gallus” is the Latin word for chicken/rooster. *I wish Mistmane would have had kids because she would make a great mother. I can see her sitting her kid’s friends down and serving them tea and cookies.
And here are some things that were just as shaky as that sweat lodge: *Cool, Rockhoof is the Keeper of Tales. Where the heck does he go from here? Does he take up shop at a library and tell stories to the foals? Go around performing like he did for the students? I NEED CLOSURE DAMMIT *I... seriously have no idea how to feel about Rockhoof alluding to birds pooping on statues. *You wanna know how Seaspray got those scars? Me too, actually. He didn’t have them in “School Daze.” *Continuing Applejack’s line of questioning, why do the hippogriffs need boats? I’m guessing they had them before the Storm King forced them underwater, so even if they couldn’t swim then, they could certainly fly. Not to mention that I haven’t seen any goods the hippogriffs are generating (like the Apple family’s apples), so even if the boats were for that purpose OH IT JUST DOESN’T MAKE SENSE OKAY?! *Somnambula. How. The actual fuck. Do pony legs work. *I gotta side with Rockhoof on the frequent fire-breathing contests. I get that no creature was in danger, but still, FUCKING FIRE! What would happen if another creature saw those flames and thought the same thing? *Wait, the Ponyville Post Office doesn’t tell the mailponies where to find the mail recipients?! Siding with Rockhoof again because that is just bad business practice! *And siding with Rockhoof YET AGAIN because you cannot tell me that one of the other creatures didn’t mistake those centerpieces for actual food! I know I may sound a bit discriminatory, but I don’t see any centerpieces like that in Yakyakistan, the Dragon Lands, or Griffonstone.
In short: A rock-hard episode with a moral as deep as the Earth’s core and vulnerable men expressing emotions for once. Sometimes I fail to understand how episodes like this can be so impactful to both kids and adults. 4.75 out of 5 rainbows  🌈 🌈 🌈 🌈%
Thank you for reading another Pone Reviews. Come back same time next week for an episode about our favorite students, including some movie callbacks and... an ever-growing psychotic filly? Diamond out!
Papy, Blueberry react to there's a fan group that worships this great/magnificent monster, the group place has all this decorations that has his face on it and this handmade big statute of him. Activities include chanting for the monster when he's training, occasionally makes and sells merchandise of him and all the money will goes to making more cool date outfits for him, solving every puzzles the monster made,etc. Doing all this while eating spaghetti/tacos that's better than the monster made.
{ What if the fans are not as nice as they seem…I wrote two long drabbles because I needed to write something different– }
〣 PAPPY 〣
After breaking the barrier, the monsters were free andintegrated into human society.
Some monsters were more loved than others. Just like thegreat Papyrus, a monster who was famous for his courage, strength and benevolence.He was the most adorable monster of the Undeground and everyone esteemed and adoredhim unconditionally.
He was a role model, the new hero of the surface, theone who would make this world a better place but this world was rotten. Athousand Charas were hidded behind their friendly and kind smiles, but Papyruswas pure and he believed that there was good in every heart.
Papyrus’ fans were nice, gentle and devoted to him.They also founded a real fan club dedicated to their favourite skeleton.
Could they be cuter than this?
He was proud of his audience, and he loved them all, everylast one of them. They filled his heart with joy and satisfaction and he didnot imagine that the world could be so beautiful and surprising.
Papyrus received a thousand letters from his fansevery day. They declared the love they felt towards him, the sentiment of esteemthey felt for him and the hope they had of meeting him in person.
His fans, the truth must be told, were not always polite,some of them possessed a little bit disturbing traits. In their letters, they wrotethings that the poor skeleton was not even able to pronounce in real life, like:
“Ilove you, great Papyrus, I want to make you mine. I wanna have you inside me, beingone with you. For the rest of eternity. ”
“Ihave always had a thing for skeletons and now that I have found you, I will beable to realize my dream. My parents have always considered me mad for my weirddesire to fuck a corpse, but I wonder… Are you alive or dead, great Papyrus?Our union will be even better than any experience I’ve ever practiced…”
“OhI’m madly in love with you, Great Papyrus. Could you send me one of your bones?I will make a necklace with them, which I will always have with me, close to myheart. I want a part of you. I want you!”
All these letters maybe were just silly and eccentricjokes, he decided not to pay attention to them because fame included also this:crazy fans.
He never talked with his brother about these letters,Sans thought everything was fine because he saw his brother loved and desiredand this was enough to make Sans feeling comfortable and calm.
One day, an anonymous group of fans, after an event Papyrusorganized with all his fandom, kidnapped him with the excuse of bringing him ina fantastic place where they could have fun together. Papyrus could not say noto his fans. He followed them, walking into their trap.
The poor skeleton could not imagine that he was goingto become ashes, his fragments would have flown over the entire city.
“Where are we going?” the naive skeletonsaid.
“In a very special place, we want to introduceyou to a person,” said a boy with a calm but sinister voice.
Papyrus was blindfolded, and he was excited because heloved surprises, he expected so many wonderful gifts. He did not even realizethat they were going inside a dark and abandoned house.
Only the light of some candles illuminated the room, arancid smell invaded the air, then the fans positioned Papyrus inside a mystic circlemade drew on the floor, and they were around him.
“Can I take off my bandage?” he asked
“Yes, of course, dear.” an anonymous voiceanswered.
Papyrus did not understand where he was and everythingwas so mysterious and supernatural.
“What’s going on here?” he asked again buthe wanted believe. He wanted to believe until the end these people were trulynice and they did not want to hurt him but…
“Oh, don’t worry. This is a ritual, you know? Wehumans pay tribute to the people we love in this way. It’s a ritual dedicatedto your greatness.” said a friendly but disturbing voice.
Papyrus, not knowing human’s traditions, was verycurious and enthusiastic about it and maybe it was right, they were not so bad.He did not say a thing, waiting for the ritual to start.
Subsequently, the adepts began to say strange and darkverses. An occult and supernatural prayer that had the purpose of evoking a maleficcreature.
"Master, we invoke you. We executed our duties, here’sthe skeleton you wanted. The chosen one. The pure soul. And we give him to youso you can use him, becoming more powerful and fearsome. We donate his soul toyou. Come and prosper.” everyone said in chorus.
"Master? Who?” screamed the frightened skeletonand a mysterious force blocked him and he was unable to escape as if his boneswere paralyzed.
"Oh, my dear and naive Papyrus. You are a pureand innocent soul, the one our master craves and that will bring them to life. Now you’ll be sacrificedto them and there will be nothing left of you. Only dust. Be happy, you’ve bechosen for something so big” said the cult leader and then everyone laughed.
The skeleton began to scream, wriggling and tremblinguntil he fell to the ground, his monster soul came out of his body and then hefainted.
"Appear to us, our master. The Great Chara!” the samemale voice screamed with solemnly and then everyone shouted in unison"Hail Chara!”.
And then, Papyrus’s body disappeared, dissolving intothe air, and only ashes were left of him.
.
〣 BLUEBERRY 〣
He was so excited and happy to have all these fans.
This was his greatest dream: to be loved andappreciated for his own abilities.
The surface was the most beautiful place he couldimagine, he felt no nostalgia for the Underground because here he foundeverything he desired.
His fans organized events in his honour, they showeredhim with compliments, affectionate letters, photographs and sweet mails everyday.
Everyone was kind and nice to him, particularly a fanwith whom he built up a deep friendship.
He and this fan wrote every day, sending messages andemails to each other. This person was friendly and kind and loved the littleskeleton. They always asked him if he had eaten enough, how his job was, if hewas happy and if his brother was fine. Sans completely liked his fan, for them,he felt a feeling that went beyond normal friendship and so one day he decidedto meet them.
Sans asked them an true date because he was tired ofthis cold and distant communication, he wanted to look into his friend’s eyes,hear their voice and hug them tightly.
This was the most beautiful gift in the world, andthis was also his friend’s wish because they could not believe that thefantastic Sans had decided to meet them.
Sans had nothing to fear because they were hisgreatest friend.
The skeleton arrived to his friend’s address, an isolatedand peaceful place where nature shone and the birds sang in the sky. Aparadise, he thought.
His friend was so kind and welcomed the skeleton witha warm hug that he returned. After that, they came into the house, Sans did noteven notice that his cell phone got no signal and there was no reception herebut this fact did not seem so relevant.
The two friends talked, they has so many arguments todiscuss, drinking a good cup of tea. They had so much to say that time passedwithout Sans realized it.
And he was more and more tired, quite sleepy.
This was strange because he was never tired, and  he usually was so euphoric and it was weird.
“Oh, something wrong, Sans?” These were hisfriend’s words, and they smiled sweetly.
“No, it’s all right, I’m so tired …” theskeleton yawned.
“Oh, it was a long journey. Maybe you should restfor a while.” His friend said, worried.
"No… I-it would… not … b-be … polit—” and then Sans fainted.
“Leaving me would not be so polite neither,little Sans …”
Afterwards, the skeleton found himself tied up on abed, motionless and shocked.
Someone drugged his tea, but he realized it too late,and the person who drugged him was standing next to him now.
“What …?” He said, regainingconsciousness.
“Hi, dear. Have you slept well?” his friendasked, smiling.
"What did you do to me? Why am I tied?” Sansshouted.
"So you won’t run away, silly. It’s so simple!”their voice was calm.
"O, god! What do you want from me? Why?” Sans asked,desperate.
Sans realized he was not able to use his magic becausethat drug made him weak, he could not move a single bone.
"Calm down, honey. Stirring is useless.” theysaid, smiling as if everything was normal.
"You’re completely crazy!” he shouted withconcern.
“You are as crazy as me if you trust people soeasily. But that’s what I like about you, you’re so generous, brave and strong.I’ve loved you from the first moment I saw you.” They proclaimed, grinning.
"No, you’ll be in a lot of trouble, my brotherwill come to take me!” Sans said trying to be threatening even though hewas very afraid.
“He will also be part of my collection. I’m notso bad, I cannot separate two good brothers like you.” they paused themselves fora moment, "together to the death!” They said and laughed diabolically.
Sans’s head throbbed and hurt, he was not able toformulate concrete sentences because everything was too absurd. Horrible. Thiswas a nightmare.
"Collection? What are you talking about?” Sans askedeven if asking questions did not make sense.
"How curious you are, my love. I also like thisabout you.” they smiled in a sinister way.
“Don’t call me love, you’re a monster!” Sans said,crying.
“No, I’m not, but you are and you’re my first sample,my little pet. You have no choice, don’t make me angry, ok?” their voice was socold and tears of terror fell from Sans’ cheeks.
“Shut up!” Sans screamed but it was useless.
“Sweet dreams, babe. Tell the stars hello for me!” theysaid, hitting Sans head with a pan and then his vision blacked out.
You Called?
Dean Winchester x Reader, Sam, Castiel
A/N: A silly, angsty little one-shot story that popped into my head after obsessively listening to this song and this song. Dean is drunk and missing the woman he loves around the holidays. Sam and Cas try to come up with something nice to do for him so he's not so sad.
Warnings: Language, drinking, angst, fluff,
Word Count: 3392
Tumblr media
“I should never have left her,” Dean said as he slid to the floor. “I shoulda… I shoulda made her come.”
“Dean, don’t do this to yourself,” Sam furrowed his brow and extended a hand to his brother. “Please, it’s kind of pathetic.”
“I blew it,” Dean lifted the bottle to his lips and winced when the whiskey touched the cut on his lip. “I’m so stupid Sam.”
“Yeah, well, that’s a discussion for another day. C’mon, let’s get you to bed,” Sam tried to maneuver Dean to his feet, but the eldest Winchester resisted.
“Jus… Just leave me Sam. I wanna sit here. I wanna get drunk and forget about her,” Dean disregarded his lip and drank greedily from the bottle.
Sam sighed and leaned against the wall where Dean once stood. Sliding down until he was on the floor, Sam reached over and grabbed the bottle from his brother.
Surprised by the action, Dean looked at him curiously through drunken eyes and shook his head. “Mmm, nope. No way, little brother, this is my bottle.”
“Bite me, dude,” Sam took the bottle and swigged it, scrunching face at the straight shot of brown liquor. “Alright, talk. What makes this one so special?” he handed the bottle back to Dean reluctantly.
“Have you seen her?” Dean mused wistfully, a dreamy smile on his lips, causing the crinkles to form around his eyes.
“Yeah, but, Dean… you’ve been with a lot of beautiful women in your life. I’ve never seen you like this. Not once since you hit puberty.”
Dean scoffed and took another shot. He licked the whiskey from his lip, and when his tongue hit the tender spot near the cut, he brought a hand to it and touched it gently. Grunting at the sharp pain, he closed his eyes and sighed.
“Well, we can start with the fact that she’s got a hell of a right hook…” Dean snorted a laugh and looked at Sam. When he didn’t laugh, Dean rolled his eyes and let his thoughts roll back to her. “I don’t know Sam, I just like her, alright?” Dean grumbled, trying to dismiss the question. Talking about all the things that made her perfect for him certainly wouldn’t help his current situation.
Sam reached for the bottle and this time Dean passed it willingly. “Its just funny to see you, of all people, so hung up on some girl.”
“She’s not just some girl, Sam,” Dean leaned his head back against the wall and exhaled deeply. Sam knew his brother was hurting and really just wanted to sit and wallow in what he thought he had lost.
Sam stood up from the ground and handed Dean back the bottle. “I’m sorry man, I wish it had gone differently.”
As he started walking down the hallway back towards the war room, he heard Dean mumble under his breath…. “she was THE girl…”
When Sam left, Dean pulled out his cell phone and brought her name up on the screen. He promised that he wouldn’t call her. He had sworn that after she asked him to give her space to figure out what she wanted. She was struggling to rectify falling in love with a hunter and getting deeper into the life than she already was. Dean was struggling with the notion of giving her what she needed when all he wanted to do was be with her.
Leaving her at the end of the last hunt had been hell, but when she finally hit him, he got the message. She begged him to go without her, even though she was in no condition to be alone. It was getting close to Christmas and he knew that was a hard time for her. He begged her to come back to the bunker with him and Sam, but she refused over and over. Finally resulting in her taking a swing and connecting with his lip.
Dean hit dial on her number. It rang straight through till voice mail. The phone momentarily slipped from his hand and he swallowed hard at the sound of her voice on the recording.
“Y/N… it’s me. I know I said I wouldn’t call. But, uh, I guess I’m a dick. I miss you and I’m really drunk. I really don’t know what to say other then I’m sorry. I should’ve tried harder to get you to come. It’s been a few days and not knowing where you are… I promised I wouldn’t call, but…” Dean paused and cursed to himself, God dammit, “…I need you. Please…”
The voicemail beeped, cutting him off. Sighing, he put his phone back in his pocket and took another long pull from the bottle of whiskey.
  About twenty minutes after leaving Dean in the hallway, Sam found Cas standing in the war room absently staring at one of the books left open on the desk.
“Cas, you alright?” Sam asked.
“Sam… hello. Yes, I’m fine. I was listening to a prayer,” Cas replied though his focus was still on listening.
Sam sat at the table and began closing up the book scattered about. Realizing that the room felt emptier than usual, Sam turned and saw that Cas had already left, leaving only a slight breeze of his wings as he disappeared from the bunker.
Shaking his head and sighing he looked back down the hallway to where he had left his brother sad and heartbroken. Reaching for the laptop, Sam’s mind started racing with ways he could try and make Dean feel a little better.
Knowing Christmas was around the corner, he thought maybe if he brought a little of the holiday spirit, along with several pies, maybe Dean’s mood would improve… slightly. After surfing through some different websites, Sam grinned to himself as he worked to put his “Bring Dean Christmas Cheer” mission into motion.
Hours later, Sam finally pushed back from the desk and wandered back down the hallway where he’d left Dean earlier. Dean was gone but the empty whiskey bottled still laid tipped over on its side. He walked further down the hallway and saw Dean’s bedroom door slightly ajar. Pushing it open cautiously, he saw Dean, still dressed and in his boots, passed out face first on his bed. His cell phone was near his ear and Sam could hear soft music playing.
Carefully walking in as not to disturb him, Sam picked up Dean’s phone and turned the music off, but not before noticing that Air Supply’s I’m All Out of Love was set to play on repeat. A pang of regret ripped through Sam and he suddenly realized just how much Dean really did love this girl.
Quietly placing the phone back and leaving the room, Sam took his own cell out in the hallway and opened it up, navigating to Castiel’s number. He hit dial and waited for the angel to answer. When he reached the voicemail, Sam sighed and squeezed his eyes shut at the eventual frustration that this message would ultimately cause.
“Cas, it’s Sam. Can you get back to the bunker as soon as possible? I need your help with something.”
  You let the phone buzz next to you until it finally stopped. Assuming the voice mail picked it up, you turned over in your bed trying your best to not think about who was calling. Deep down you knew it was Dean. You always knew when it was him that called.
Closing your eyes to try and sleep, his face kept coming to mind. Rolling onto your back, you covered your face with one arm and heard the buzz of the phone again signaling that you had a message.
Unable to let your curiosity slide, you grabbed the phone and decided to listen to the message. Hearing Dean’s voice caused your stomach to lurch and tears to stab at the corners of your eyes. You listened to his inebriated rambling and though it should’ve infuriated you, you found yourself missing him desperately. You had been the one to ask for space, and while he agreed, you could feel yourself starting to miss him.
Dean had been a bit surprised when he unexpectedly popped into your life. Six months earlier on a random hunt, you had bumped into him and his brother and ended up working with them to out a bunch of ghouls.
You never expected to fall in love with Dean Winchester. It happened quickly. Within days the two of you had spent nearly every waking hour together. A week later, you were spending every night together. After a month, you were fairly certain that he was the one you were meant to be with forever.
Problem was, forever could end and that scared the shit out of you. A hunt went wrong almost got Dean dead and it was more than you could handle, watching the man you were falling in love with die wasn’t something you ever agreed to. That part of you that feared losing everything kicked in and ignited a fight or flight response. You decided to fly.
Taking a deep breath, your mind began to reach out and pray. To whom, you weren’t exactly sure, but you could feel your inner thoughts fueled by a deep longing for some sort of guidance.
I don’t really know what I am doing here, but if anyone is listening… God, Cas, hell… I’ll even take Gabriel… one of you… please. What do I do? Dean is so important to me. But this life sucks you dry. I don’t know if I can be more of anything to anyone. He deserves the world… I’m so afraid I can’t be that for him. But, fuck. I love him, and I miss him… Please, tell me what to do. Anyone listening… maybe throw a girl a sign…
When nothing came, you sighed and reached for the phone again. Grabbing it with the intention of calling Dean, you chastised yourself immediately and navigated to the calendar and realized that Christmas was less than a week away. For normal people, that would mean thinking about buying gifts, decorating, planning parties and sending cards. For hunters, it meant being on high alert for a wide variety of creatures that liked to pray on the sad and lonely, or feed off the Christmas spirit, or lack thereof.
Frustrated and sad, you put the phone back down on the table just as a bright white light engulfed your bedroom. Shielding your eyes from the illumination, you took two pillows and buried your head so you didn’t lose your eyesight completely.
When the light finally began to fade, you uncovered your eyes and instinctively drew the blankets up to cover your chest. At the end of your bed stood the angel in a trench coat, his face soft and concerned.
“You called?” he mused, a slight smiling formed on his face.
Tumblr media
  Dean woke the next morning with a raging headache and the melody to Air Supply stuck in his head. Despite the pain ringing in his ears, he shuffled down the hallway towards the kitchen mumbling to himself.
“I’m all out of love, I’m so lost without you…” he sang to himself as he slowly moved through the kitchen towards the coffee that was already perked. “I know you were right, believing for sooo long…”
He poured the steaming liquid into his cup and inhaled deeply. His head pounded terribly, but somehow, he didn’t mind. The pain in his head was distracting from the hollowness in his chest and right then he was grateful for that.
Making his way back down the hallway, Dean had planned to go straight back to bed. The sound of music playing softly from the war room stopped him and made him turn in the other direction.
“Really Sam?” he mumbled to himself as he recognized the melody of Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree playing over the PA system throughout the bunker. Rolling his eyes, he shambled his way into the room and stopped in his tracks the second he breached the entryway.
Off to the right was an eight-foot high Christmas tree completely decorated with lights and ornaments. Beneath it was several wrapped packages and stockings stuffed to overflowing. Dean scanned the rest of the room and was taken aback by the number of decorations and holiday fare spread throughout.
Sam was standing near the tree, adding a few last touches to the top and adjusting the star. Castiel was sitting at the table with several unwrapped packages in front of him, two tubes of wrapping paper and a dozen pieces of scotch tape stuck to his fingers.
“Sam… I don’t know how to wrap presents. Please, can’t I do something else to help?”
Laughing, Sam waved him to stand up and Cas began peeling the tape off. They both noticed Dean at the same time and smiled with a nod.
“Hey. So, what’dya think?” Sam asked,smiling and extending his arms out wide.
“Well, it looks like Santa threw up in here,” Dean mocked and sipped his coffee. “What’s all this for anyway?”
“We can’t celebrate our first Christmas together without a tree dummy,” a familiar voice called from behind him.
You were standing in the entryway behind him with an armload of tinsel and garland. Walking into the room slowly, you placed the decorations on the end of the table and turned your attention to Dean.
“Hey,” you said delicately, chewing on the inside of your lip as you locked with his brilliant green eyes.
His expression softened and he smiled at the sight of you. “What are you doing here?” he asked in surprise, nearly choking on the last word as he pushed it out of his mouth.
“I got your message,” taking a small step closer to Dean, you leaned on one of the chairs and looked back over your shoulder at Sam and Cas. “Castiel here was nice enough to give me a lift over.”
Sam cleared his throat and looked over to Cas. “C’mon man, I have some more stuff down in storage. Let’s go grab it.”
Looking between you and Dean, and back to Sam, he got the hint and quickly stood to follow Sam out of the war room.
Turning back to Dean, you suddenly felt nervous and more than a little guilty.
“Look, I know what I said, and I’m sorry. Your message—”
Dean cut you off as he wrapped a hand around your neck and pulled you into him. His lips crashed onto yours with little warning, causing you to smile into his kiss. Without hesitation, your arms curled up around his neck as you kissed him back without indecision.
His hands cupped each side of your face and gently pulled you back from him. Running his fingers lightly through your hair with one hand, he sighed and rested his forehead against yours.
“I guess you’re happy to see me?” you teased, earning a chuckle from the eldest Winchester.
“You have no fucking idea,” he said and kissed your head. “What changed your mind?”
“After I heard your message, I prayed. I didn’t know what to say or who to address, so I just sorta named everyone I could think of that wasn’t a dick.”
“Small list,” Dean laughed.
“Right? What the hell… But anyway, then Cas was there. He heard me,” you said and nuzzled into Dean’s chest as he enfolded his arms around your shoulders and rested his chin on your head. “He helped me realize that it doesn’t matter what happens tomorrow. All we can control is right now, and right now, I want to be with you and have as normal a Christmas as we can possibly have. If… that’s what you want too.”
Dean ran his hands down your shoulders and traced the frame of your body down to your hips. His fingers dug into the flesh there, drawing you as close to himself as he could. Leaning in, he ghosted your lips with his.
“It’s the only thing I could ever ask for,” he whispered before leaving a soft kiss on your lips.
Allowing his fingers to slip beneath the hem of your shirt, you felt a wave of goosebumps shiver across your skin at the contact.
“The only thing, huh?” you teased and kissed him again.
Dean looked up for a second of consideration before running his fingers through your hair again. “Maybe a few other things…” he smirked, allowing his eyes to gaze down the length of your neck to your chest and the partially exposed cleavage.
Pretending to be offended you grabbed his shirt and pulled him down towards you for a kiss. Your lips parted upon touching his, allowing him to take as much of you as he could. He didn’t disappoint. Dean kissed you deeply, and with each passing second, your ache for each other was growing to a point of necessity.
His hands were back on your hips, and you could feel him lifting you off the ground initiating you to wrap your legs around his waist. Draping your arms around his neck, you couldn’t help but grin as he continued to kiss you as though you’d not seen each other in years.
Being so wrapped up in each other, you didn’t hear the footsteps trail into the room.
“Well, that escalated quickly,” Cas said loud enough to disrupt yours and Dean’s reconnection as he quickly but gently put you back down. “I guess the good news is that you are clearly in the correct place to be acting out a scene from that movie we watched… what was it called Dean?”
“Um, Cas now’s not really the time,” Dean said and motioned for Cas to stop talking.
“Alright, well. I just meant that you are standing under the mistletoe, so you were in the right place.”
You and Dean looked up simultaneously and snickered a laugh. All over the ceiling above you hung sprigs of the decoration a foot or so apart, all the way through the room.
“Overkill maybe?” Dean asked with a smirk.
“Just wanted to be sure you didn’t miss your chance to kiss her,” Cas said before grabbing a box off the table. “I’ll leave you to it.”
Once he was gone, you and Dean couldn’t help but laugh. He caught your gaze and the smile slowly faded from his face.
“You being here is really the best gift I could’ve gotten,” Dean said, lightly brushing his thumb against your cheek.
“But you haven’t opened my gift yet,” you said playfully as you bit down on your lip. “Come with me…”
Walking over towards the Christmas tree, you motioned for him to sit at the table and he did as asked. From under the tree, you grabbed one of the larger boxes and placed it down in front of him.
Dean furrowed his brow and looked up at you. “What is it?”
“Just open it, but be careful… its delicate,” you warned and rested a hand on his shoulder.
Dean tore off the paper and when he lifted the top of the large white box. You couldn’t help but grin like an idiot as his emerald green eyes grew wide with excitement. Inside were two large, home cooked pies.
“Are these from where I think they’re from?” Dean’s voice quivered with anticipation as he drew in a deep scent of them, “that little place… uh… Annie’s Shack in Bloomington?”
When he saw you nodding, he smiled larger than you’d ever seen him smile. He grabbed you by the waist and pulled you down onto his lap, causing you to squeal with surprise. Dean kissed you again and this time when he pulled away, you could see the feelings he had for you written all over his face.
“Seriously, this will go down as the best Christmas ever. Got my best girl and got the World’s Best Pies, what more could I want?”
Smiling, you reached into your shirt pocket and pulled out a small piece of paper. “How about the recipes to make the pies?”
“No…” he exclaimed breathlessly, “Really?”
“Mhm, I convinced her to hand it over when I told her they were for you. She still says you paid for the new roof for that place with the amount of pie you ate that week.”
“Worth every scent,” Dean mused and passed a glance at the apple pie.
“Dean…” you used your fingers to gently turn his head towards yours, “Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, sweetheart,” he pulled you into another kiss and somehow forgot all about the pies on the table in front of him.
Okay so I was finishing work outside earlier and a random girl came up to me out of nowhere and leant over the fire escape and was like "Can you do me a favour?" and she handed me a folded up towel really delicately and told me there was a tiny mouse wrapped up in it, and she asked me to go release it somewhere safe for her because she had no shoes on. I literally dunno who she was or why no shoes, but POINT IS, can you pretty please turn it into a Wayhaught prompt? Just because because
Waverly lets out a soft sigh as she drags a black trash bag across the parking lot, the mound of discarded gifts from her ex, weighing her down significantly. “Fuck you, Champ,” she murmurs to herself as she readjusts the bag again.
She’d dumped the man as soon as she found him in his dorm with another girl and not just any girl, her own sister, Wynonna. Sure, Wynonna had apologized and really Waverly wasn’t all that mad at her, if anything she was relieved that she had an excuse to end her relationship.
Champ on the other hand…he could go fuck himself, in fact, that’s probably what he’d be doing while Waverly disposes of any shred of evidence that she’d ever been with him.
“Why the fuck is the dumpster on the other side of the fucking building?” Waverly huffs as she pauses to take a breath, running a hand through her hair.
She shakes her head a bit, looking around the corner and into the alley where the dumpster sits, trying to gauge how much effort she needed to get her bag from point a to point b.
She knows she could have asked her roommate for help, but there was something uncomfortable about getting someone else involved with something so personal. “Okay, you got this, Waves,” she nods before hulking the bag back over her shoulder.
Thankfully the lid is open when she reaches the dumpster, making the job of wrestling the mess into the bin, just a little bit easier. When she’s finished, Waverly leans against the brick wall, eyes closed as she just lets herself relax.
“Hey, you okay?” A soft voice above her asks, making the small girl jump, her eyes snapping open. There’s a tall redhead standing on the fire escape, a small towel folded in her hands.
“Uh, yeah,” Waverly replies, brows furrowed as she takes in the other woman’s appearance. A baggy hoodie over fuzzy pajama pants and no shoes. “What are you doing?”
The ginger looks down at herself and then to the towel in her hands before shrugging a bit. “Wanna do me a favor?”
“I-I guess?” Waverly answers, an odd frown pulling at her lips as she watched the taller girl kneel down, extending the folded towel toward her.
“There’s a tiny mouse wrapped up in this, could you take it to the grass over by the car ports and let it go? I would but…I forgot my shoes and I’m five floors up from here,” Mystery Girl says, with the most sincere look on her face.
How could Waverly deny this beautiful, caring girl? So, she reaches out and gingerly takes the folded towel from her. “Yeah, of course,” She says softly, bringing the little package close to her chest.
This makes the girl grin before she’s darting back up the steps, presumably heading back to her apartment. “Alrighty then,” Waverly chuckles to herself as she heads toward the car ports.
She kneels down in the grass once she reaches it, unfolding the towel slowly. “Hey little guy,” Waverly hums as she catches sight of the small, grey creature.
The mouse wiggles their little pink nose at her, letting out the smallest little squeak when she gently strokes the top of their head. “You’re really sweet, huh?” Waverly murmurs, watching the mouse crawl from the towel and up her arm. “Don’t you wanna go home?”
The little thing just continues it’s journey up her arm, curiously sniffing her shirt before nibbling at it gently. “Aww, I can’t just leave you out here…”
With that revelation, Waverly gently picks up her new friend and places them back in the towel, folding it up before making the trek back to her dorm.
After introducing her roommate to their new pet and checking to see if it was a boy or a girl (which was harder than they anticipated, google was involved) they affectionately named him Goob and placed him in a small plastic tote with some towels and some veggies they checked to make sure were mouse friendly.
“I’ll head to Petsmart tomorrow morning to get him a nice set up and food,” Waverly hums, smiling at her new little friend.
                                                        ~~~~
A few weeks pass and Goob seems happy in his enclosure that seems much more extravagant than anywhere Waverly has ever lived in, complete with many tubes for him to run around in. “Can’t believe you gave up about half the living room for him,” Wynonna comments as she bends down to look into the cage.
“I just wanted him to be comfortable…” Waverly mumbles, shrugging a bit as she comes to look at her pet. “I’m even looking into finding him some friends…since they’re social animals and I’ve read that they get really lonely.”
“You’re ridiculous,” Wyn chuckles, shaking her head a bit as she straightens up. “Anyway, you ready to go? Doc’s waiting in the parking lot.”
“Yeah,” Waverly smiles, taking a moment to drop some treats in for Goob before grabbing her jacket. “Let’s go!”
They head down stairs, chatting about the night they were about to have. Doc and his partner Doll’s had finally opened up their new bar and they were treating Wynonna and Waverly to free drinks for always supporting them.
“Hey, do you mind if I check my mail quick? It’ll only take a second,” Waverly hums as they step off the elevator, brows raised at her older sister who just shrugs. “Kay, just wait for me by the door.”
Waverly all but skips to the wall of mail boxes, skidding to a halt when she sees a familiar crop of fiery hair a few boxes down from her own. “Mouse girl,” she finds herself saying outloud, causing the taller girl to turn.
“Oh, it’s you! I was kind of wondering when I’d run into you,” She says, running a hand through her already messy hair. “Well, hoping actually. I wanted to introduce myself since I didn’t after handing you a small life.”
Waverly chuckles at that, biting her lip. How was this girl so damn cute? “Yeah, that was a little weird,” she says, shrugging her shoulders a bit. “But I’m Waverly.”
“Nicole,” The red head replies, leaning against the wall of boxes. “I hope that little guy is alright out there.”
“Yeah, about that, I kind of adopted him when he did the cutest thing and climbed up my arm and I just…i couldn’t leave him out there, ya know?” Waverly spits out quickly, rubbing the back of her neck.
This makes Nicole grin, the same grin she wore when Waverly accepted the little creature. “That’s really awesome and super adorable,” she says, shaking her head a bit. “I’d love to see him sometime.”
“I’m sure Goob would love that,” Waverly replies, a blush crawling up her neck at the thought of seeing Nicole again. “I can give you my number, so you can let me know when you’re free?”
“Yeah, that’d be awesome,” Nicole hums, offering up her device without a question. “Wait, Goob from Meet the Robinsons, Goob?”
“Yeah actually,” Waverly smiles, handing the phone back before shuffling her feet a bit. “But, I should go, I have a thing to go to with my sister.”
“Have fun,” Nicole says softly, offering Waverly a warm smile that has the smaller girl feeling a certain kind of way.
“Thanks, I’ll text you,” She murmurs, taking a few steps back before turning around and forcing herself to walk to where her sister was waiting for her.
Waverly is in the car when her phone vibrates, Nicole’s name flashing across the notification bar. Do you like fishing? Cuz I’ve been hooked and you’re reeling me in
“Jesus,” Waverly breathes out, her cheek flushing as she shakes her head, sending Nicole a heart eyes emoji before tucking the phone away, unsure if she’ll be able to keep her mind from wandering during the night.
Send me things?

Hook, Line, and Sinker
Joker!Baek
AU List
word count: 3310
Did you think crashing one party gets you off the hook? I know you have more up your sleeve.
Baekhyun closed the message in frustration. Time was ticking and he was running out of ideas. The threat was a tangible thing; a creature, breathing down his neck at all times just waiting to snap. He grabbed his cane, something he was using more for its original purpose than his tool for destruction, and exited the run down pastry shop. He had some damage to do.
You sat at the round table in the batcave, scrolling through your phone while Batman did some routine investigation on the big screen. He peeked over his shoulder at you and shook his head.
“Why don’t you pay more attention, Robin? I could use your help on this situation.”
Little did he know, you were also looking up recent news stories to see if you could find something hidden in them. But they were full of nothing out of the ordinary.
Frustrated, you put your phone down and looked up at him. “Why didn’t you tell me the real Joker is alive.”
“I’ll save that for another day…”
“I wanna know now!” You raised your voice. Batman looked at you surprised. “I’m sorry, but I’m tired of everyone telling me to wait. Stop hiding things from me, I can handle it.”
He ran a hand through his hair, a typical frustrated gesture. You felt no sympathy, he brought this all upon himself.
“Did Nightwing tell you?”
“It doesn’t matter,” you snap. “The point being is that you didn’t. I’m not the same helpless girl you picked off the streets. You can tell me.”
“You’re right.” He concedes. He turns back to the big screen and starts pulling up files in multiple windows. You gather that it must be all the evidence he’s collected so far. One news article in particular brings a tightness to your chest.
“Why is that there?”
Junmyeon’s expression softens and you see his shoulders slump. “That’s where I believe it started.” He zooms in on the article, one about a fire that destroyed an entire 10 story apartment building and nearly everyone in it.
“The day I lost my family?”
“You weren’t the only one to lose everything.” Junmyeon corrects. He pulls up a few other articles about this event, showing different pictures from the scene. One picture in particular has you coming up to stand next to Junmyeon as he zooms in on it. Next to one of the ambulances where two children, a boy and girl, were holding hands as they watched the nightmare in front of them.
“Look familiar?”
“Is that me? And…” you couldn’t bring yourself to say his name. Batman just nodded in confirmation.
“But what does this have to do with the Joker?”
“You two disappeared. I came the next day to check on the scene, but whoever was looking after you two claimed you ran away. I found you three days later across the city but… he was gone.”
“He could’ve been saved.” You say, but then something more serious crosses your mind. “I could have saved him.”
“You can’t blame yourself, you both suffered greatly. But if you can recall anything, it’ll help immensely.”
That was just thing though, you couldn’t remember anything at all. You didn’t even remember that Baekhyun was there, that you knew him that long ago.
“The fire was started on the floor that you both lived on, more specifically, his apartment.”
“You don’t think he started it, do you?” You panicked. After all, you were just children then. If anything, it could have been an accident.
“No one ever found out anymore details than that. I think it might have been a set up.”
“You think the Joker really did all that?”
“If anyone ever finds out where the fire started from, it all links back to your friend.”
You collapse back into your chair. Baekhyun was framed and now the Joker holds the crime against him. A crime that he didn’t even commit, or at least you hope so.
“We have to help him, Junmyeon. I don’t know how this all leads to the Joker’s apparent death but he’s had Baekhyun on black mail long enough. Who knows what he’ll make him do next.”
“We’ll figure this out, I promise.”
You looked up at him skeptically. He hasn’t shown you all his trust lately, but after opening up you can’t help but feel a little hopeful.
“What changed your mind?” You dare to ask. Batman never goes through a change of heart this easily.
“You saved him from the collapsing building.”
You avert your eyes, trying to hide the shock. “We don’t kill our criminals.”
“I know. But I heard you call out to him. That’s when I knew he wasn’t just some kid with a bad past.”
You were trying hard not to reel over the fact that Batman has known your dirty little secret all along. In the end, it’s worked out for the better.
“Do you know where he is now?”
Now came the difficult part. Batman was on your side now, Baekhyun’s side, but were you allowed to open up about where he stayed and all the struggles he goes through? You felt like you had to ask Baekhyun’s permission first.
“Fair enough.” Batman says after reading your silence. “If you wish to talk to him first, I won’t intervene.”
You almost trip over the chair in your haste to get up and get your Robin gear.
“But please, Robin, promise me at the first sign of danger you’ll comm me.”
After gathering your bag, you walk over and wrap your arms around his shoulders. “I promise. No more solo work. We’re a team.”
He held you tightly, almost afraid to let you go, but he eventually does. You grab your utility belt off the table and strap it on immediately as you run out of the cave.
Dressed in your Robin gear, you stick to taking the high route to get to where you were going. It was late afternoon, so if anyone spotted you, it wouldn’t seem too out of the ordinary.
From the rooftop you grapple down the fire escape and land safely on the ground. You were in the same alley where you met the Joker for the first time. How things felt so different now.
You run down the alley and realize it was just 3 blocks away from where Baekhyun hides out. You never realized you’ve been running into the same place all this time.
You arrive at the pastry shop that looks extra dark now that the sun is about to set. It doesn’t look like he’s here but you give it a shot.
“Baekhyun, it’s me! Please come out, I want to talk.”
You’re met with silence in the following minutes. So next you try for the door and it happens to be unlocked. You step inside the dark shop.
A chill runs over you as you inspect the interior. It doesn’t look any different than before, but it feels even more abandoned without Baekhyun here. Slowly, you walk further in to see if you can find some clues.
You can tell he was here earlier because you recognize his smell. Villain or not, he had a very pleasant scent that was either from his cologne or the flower he wears pinned to his jacket. You look up towards the back of the shop, and a blinking light catches your attention.
Wandering closer, you find that it’s coming from small computer hidden behind the last booth. You move the mouse and the computer shines awake. A message appears on the screen from an unknown sender. An internal battle threatens to give you a headache as you decide whether to open it or not. In the end, you do.
After reading the message, you stomach sinks into a pit and you stumble backwards. ‘I know you have more up your sleeve’. What was that supposed to even mean? Was it from the real Joker? Is this how he’s been controlling Baekhyun?
Without second thought, you minimize the message and send the shop coordinates to Batman. Let him figure this out while you go look for Baekhyun. He was already a wanted man, you didn’t want to chance him doing something truly regretful.
Just as you were about to leave, another message appears on screen, again from an unknown sender.
Hello girl wonder.
Your heart stops beating for too long of a second. Without moving, you wait to see if more messages will come.
I don’t appreciate snooping. So here’s a special message just for you.
Following this message, an 8bit animated Joker appears on the screen. He walks to the middle, pulls out a toy gun, and when he pulls the trigger, a small flag with ‘Bang’ written on it comes out. The distraction ends when you hear a ticking sound.
You manage to sprint halfway to the door when the computer explodes behind you, sending you flying into the booths and tables. Your head rattles for a moment but it clears quickly enough for you to evacuate the now burning pastry shop.
Once outside, you catch your breath for a moment when you see a shadow descend upon you.
“What happened?” Batman asks, the panic very clear in his tone.
“It’s the Joker. He’s been sending Baekhyun messages telling him to do bad things. He somehow knew it was me so he blew up the computer.”
Batman takes a moment to process this, and you can tell he’s just as confused even with the cowl covering his face.
“Where’s Baekhyun?”
“I don’t know. We have to split up and find him before he does something!”
“I’ll notify Nightwing to cover the other end of the city. Get a head start.” Batman commands. You tried not to make a face at the mention of Nightwing, whom you were still angry at. But at this moment in time, all the help you could get was more important.
Sprinting off down the alleyway, you make your way back to where you came from. As you approach the busy street, someone calls out to you.
“Robin! Isn’t it a bit early to be out like this?”
It was Jongin, the handsome new architect who seemed to be in high spirits, considering his newest project was still in shambles just a block over.
“Crime fighting doesn’t have business hours. Actually I..”
“It’s very commendable when a person takes their job seriously,” he interrupted.  “I never got to thank you for saving my life.”
He picked a terrible time to do it but you had to give him the benefit of the doubt.
“Just doing my duty.” You bashfully reply. The way he was staring at you made you feel like he had more to say. “But maybe we can talk another time. I have a serious matter to attend to.”
“Of course. I have a new office where I’m temporarily working. Don’t be a stranger, I’d love to be able to talk more.” He says as he hands you his business card. The whole situation was very bizarre to you. Nobody ever tried to make relations with you as Robin. And you didn’t go around revealing yourself as Robin when you were in civilian clothes. But you take his card anyway, give him a polite nod and disappear down the street.
Well after the sun had set, you start to go semi crazy. Batman commed you to let you know that he took the north and west side of the city while Nightwing was covering the east. Which left you with the south end. Hours were passing by, and nothing was happening. Even the city’s police were quiet tonight. But you saw the message and without a doubt Baekhyun had read it before you. The tension you were feeling wouldn’t go away. Something bad was going to happen.
You reach the outskirts of town, where it was darker than normal with little to no street lamps illuminating. It took all your might not to check your comm every five minutes, and not to send Batman or Nightwing messages asking whether they found Baekhyun. You hoped they’d at least message you right away if that happened.
This far out from the city there were only single houses acres apart from each other and a warehouse sprinkled here and there. It was a sketchy enough place to start an evil plot before unleashing it on the public. And you were right to believe so, because soon enough you heard commotion coming from one of the warehouses.
It was a dark enough place that if it hadn’t been for some light reflecting off a lone emergency light, you most likely wouldn’t have known there was an entire building there to begin with. You approach with caution, sticking to close to the brick that it scraped your palms as you moved, and peek your head around the door. Sure enough, your green haired friend was inside moving various objects around.
“Baekhyun,” you call without hesitation.
He whips around immediately, eyes wide as he finally recognizes you.
“Robin, what are you doing here?” He starts to walk over, a limp still slowing him down slightly. “Never mind don’t answer that. You have to get out of here.”
“Baek, I’m here to help. Come with me and I’ll keep you safe. I promise this time.”
He tilts his head in confusion. He most likely had trouble remembering what happened when you were children as well, but an explanation would have to wait.
“Batman and Nightwing are helping too. We’ll protect you. You don’t have to keep doing this.”
“I wish it were that simple, but you have to listen to me.” He comes closer, gently cradling your face in his hand. “Get out while you still can. I’ll make sure he never finds out you were here.”
You take his hand tightly into yours. “You’re coming with me.”
“Robin, please. I don’t want you involved in this.”
“It’s too late for that! I’m not going to let that maniac hurt you anymore.” You pull him along but he’s stronger and stays in place.
“Don’t make me do this.”
You stop struggling and turn back to him. “Baek, let’s go.” You insist. He lifts his cane and places the handle against your wrist, and suddenly you retract your hand after a painful sting.
“What was that for?”
“If you won’t leave, I’ll make you leave.” He replies, lifting his cane into a offensive stance.
You chest tightens at the sight of him. “I won’t fight you.”
“You think I want to fight you?” He yells in frustration. When you don’t arm yourself, he takes the first swing at you with the cane. You barely side step away from the hit, but he comes at you relentlessly. You have no choice but to pull out your staff and parry back at him. It’s difficult to keep up as your emotions cloud your judgment. You knew what you felt was no longer casual, but a dire need to save him and make up for all that’s happened in the past. You wanted to show him care and kindness and all the other things he’s been deprived of. Healing him will by no means be an easy journey, but you two were not alone now that Batman was surely on your side.
He hooks your staff and spins his cane so it jerks out of your hold. Before you can arm yourself with something else, he kicks you back and you meet the ground in an instant.
“I would have thought you learned that move by now.” He jokes, but there was no humor in his tone. He presses the end of his cane against your chest as he leans closer. “I’m going to give you one more chance to run. If you don’t, I’ll restrain you and leave it up to Batman to find you.”
Tears threatened to spill from your eyes. You still couldn’t believe he was really putting up a fight against you.
“I just want to help.” You rasp, your mind and body exhausted from all the trauma.
“I know. But you’re the one and only thing I care about in this stupid world. If he catches you, I will never forgive myself. I would end my life then and there.”
This time, there was no holding back tears. You were the tiny thread that held his life together, and the thought of you also being the reason he ends it absolutely decimated you.
He placed his cane on the ground and then leaned over you on all fours, placing a soft kiss on your lips. It was so warm and you could feel the good radiating off of him, but he wouldn’t, or couldn’t, give in to it. He pulled away slowly, relishing every moment your lips still touched.
“Baek, please.” You reach your arms up to hold him close, but he grabs your wrists lightly and holds them in one hand. He reaches into his pocket and pulled something out, something that he attached to your wrists, instantly binding them.
He lifts you up and carries you across the room, hiding you well behind some storage crates. Once he puts you down, he removes a pin from his jacket and sticks it onto your cape. His hand lingers a bit, going up to stroke your cheek before he presses your comm, sending a signal to Batman.
“The pin should disguise you long enough for Batman to arrive and find you. The Joker won’t have any idea this ever happened.”
You were shaking your head, pleading him to reconsider. He stares into your eyes, conveying his deepest regret and apology. Without another word, he stands, grabs his cane, and leaves the premise. But it wasn’t without seeing the tears that stained his cheeks, just like yours.
Time passes but you don’t know how much. It was starting to feel unusually long though, and you began to wonder if Batman and Nightwing caught up with Baekhyun or the real Joker. You sit propped against the cold wall, trying not to fall asleep, but it proves to be difficult. If you fell asleep, maybe you’d wake up to find that none of this ever happened.
From the south end of the building a rattling sound echoes. Suddenly all your senses are heightened and you barely suppress the fear growing within you. You couldn’t believe Baekhyun actually bound your hands, and you couldn’t tell if the disguise was still working. You shrank back against the wall to make yourself as small as possible and keep yourself hidden; at least until you could see who was approaching. But the warehouse was in complete darkness save for the door light outside and the moon shining in through the windows lining the high walls. You worked on the bind, hoping you could at least get it loose but it was impossible. Next time you would see Baekhyun, you would demand he clean out his villain inventory. There would be no more use for all this.
The warehouse resumed to deathly quiet, but it didn’t subdue the panic you felt. You couldn’t write off the noise as just critters running around. A chill ran over your entire being, solidifying the fact that your company was not pleasant.
A buzz whirs through the air and a dart pierces the pin Baekhyun placed on your cape, leaving you feeling exposed suddenly. You don’t hear the sound, but a ghostly presence fills the whole room.
A single safety light turns on and underneath stands a figure. It wasn’t the seeing part that would have convinced you anyway, but what the voice said.
“Hello, girl wonder.”

Everyone did fantastic and I love the results.
Firstly, anyone not selected in the winner results below, please still e-mail me at [email protected] — you will be receiving a notecard drawing of Sam and some stickers for your participation in the contest! Just let me know who you are, your entry, and your address, if you’re comfortable with that.
The winner of the contest for the prize of the comic prompt is @withthedemonblood! Please e-mail me and we can get your unique Sam-centric comic started for you, your eyes only! Unless you wanna post it when you get it. Y’know. Whatevs.
The two winners for the fanfiction category is @brothersapart and @womanoflettersinthebunker ! The two winners for fan art is @sketchydean and @fioreitaliano (which is not letting me ping you, what a butthead tumblr is). The two winners for fan edits are @samprincesschester and @jaredbottoms!  Let me know if you would like The Little Golden Hunter’s Book or a grayscale copy of Ask Sam Stuff Volumes 1 or 2. If you would like to wait, you can request to have grayscale Volume 3 when it is completed! If you would rather have a drawn piece that is SPN-related, let me know, we can work something out that is non-book-related.
(IF YOU ARE NOT ON THE LIST BELOW, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I will add you and you will still be able to get a gift for partaking for your hard work — a Sam notecard of thanks and stickers! Apologies to the helpful notes left on the previous post before this one; I was at work so I couldn’t respond. :’))
Fanfiction:
Metal by @waytoomuchanalysis : A fantastic continuation of the bend the spoon entry, it dives into the potential of Sam stil having his powers! Look out for the warnings, and enjoy a dose of hurt!Sam, too! I love me some hurt!Sam.
The Long Road Home by @brothersapart : A wonderfully well-written 'novelization' of here and here, where Dean died as a child in the fire with their mother. Really awesome to tackle this one, and you did a great job conveying additional things in the narrative!
I’m Okay by @ultimatefandomtrash61 : A gritty and heavy covering of the entry involving Sam's feelings after Toni's deceit in 12x02; heed the warnings at the start! It's a tough subject for sure, but it's done very well!
As Dreamer’s Do by @withthedemonblood : Really wonderful descriptions and details as this goes, this takes what is a pretty silly entry and adds a lot of personality and weight to it; I love me some weechester stuff, and there's even a little hurt!Dean in there for you guys who like fairness in torment, haha.
Manoir de Mes Reves by @captain-sodapop : I gotta say, I didn't even remotely consider the http://asksamstuff.tumblr.com/post/118043076689/an-interesting-afternoon-at-the-mills-residence twister entry on Sam's Birthday bash would end up as an entry! Great humor and a fun concept, check this one out.
I Love You, Too by @manuscript-or : Based on Sam's addiction to coffee (dude sometimes there's such a thing as too much), this AU of the pilot episode is pretty cute and full of Jess and Sam goodness! And y'all know I'm a sucker for Jess and Sam. Check this out!
Happy Halloween by @womanoflettersinthebunker : Based on the halloween post about Abby the little sassy cowgirl with read hair and freckles! I really love the alternate route this took, and it gave Sam a fun little adventure to boot — love the details of Sam naming trick-or-treaters in this head! Fantastic work. ♥
Proud Defense by @my-pen-is-my-sword : Very, very neat — an expansion of this strange creature from a pre-series comic! I'm impressed with the attempt to tackle this one, since it was one of the more vague and mysterious comics I've thrown out there, but it ended up being a really great piece! Excellent job.
Scars by @samsexualdeancurious :  A short but sweet Jess/Sam entry, exploring a panel in this entry a bit more. Did I mention I'm a sucker for Jessica and Sam? Because I am. Great job on expanding on that entry, and great writing.
A Long Night (Part 1 | Part 2) by @borrowedtimeandspace : A lovely write-up of a section of the Ask Lil' Sam Stuff plotline; I really loved doing that story, and I'm tickled to see that it was chosen to be done for the entry! They've done a really good job adding little narrative touches to this, and it's a nice addition to the bitty!Sam collection!
Fan art:
BANANA SAM by @fioreitaliano : Based on this. I cannot believe my eyes. A+ banana!Sam. I'm so happy to have laid eyes on him in all his wonder.
No but Really, Call Me, Cont’d by @saintedsam : The cutest little continuation of Max Banes and Sam Winchester, from my entry of Max hitting on an oblivious Sam. And here he is, continuing to be oblivious! What a cute art style, I love it! (And that shirt, Max.)
The Purple Dog Shirt, Pt. II by @sketchydean : What a great follow-up to the purple dog shirt comic! It can be tough to whip up comics, but this is done extremely well and feels like such a solid continuation, I love it. Now - where the heck did that shirt go!!
Dean, I Made You More Pie by @h3dgehogjohn : Isn't this so cute? A picture of little Sam from this entry making more 'pie' for his brother! I love them in their little socks; great job, and a+ freckles. ;)
It was a long night by @dovesdanceatdusk  Banana!Sam strikes again!! This time with some backstory! I love the way Sam's drawn in this, what an excellent style, and — yeah, it was a long night.
I’m Gonna Rip Your Lungs Out! by @nisaki-chan : Oh man, protective!Dean, weechesters, and the threat of lung-ripping. Our favorite! Great art style and an excellent choice in topic. I approve.
Take Care of Yourself! by @dozmuffinxc : Look at this cute entry! A Sam swathed in blankets! A really adorable art style, and a good point to keep in mind for everyone, especially over-working little Sam.
Samulet? ... Deanmulet? by @sakurinn : Based on this post, sakurinn made an excellent video of Sam getting his own personal samulet! A Deanulet? A wonderful shout-out to you for making a video entry!! This is her first post on tumblr, so please be sure to send lovely wishes and a welcome to the community! ♥
Edits:
Lack of Agency by @jaredbottoms : An excellent study in gif-form of some of the lack of agency in Sam's life, based on this post — it's crazy to see it all laid out, and important to remember. Great selections for a strong gifset.
Cute-o-Meter by @samprincesschester : Something a little less serious — a good ol' cracky screencap comic, based on this cracky lovefest of a post! I love the humor in this, and I love the team effort going into reminding everyone what a cutie-patootie Sam is. Thanks a ton, Team Freely Loving Sam Winchester.
Once again, give everyone a hand and some reblogs/notes/follows, they’re all super awesome and I’m so happy to have seen their work! Again, if you have an entry that isn’t here because I’m a dipstick and missed it, or I lost it while pasting together this monstrosity (so much linking, so much writing, ieieeeiee), message me and let me know! You’ll certainly still get yourself some stickers. ;)
Until the next contest??? Maybe???
I’ll just see you next entry, haha.
— Ashlee
P.S. Happy birthday, Sam. Congrats on being alive somehow in your canon!

The First Date
You, Jesse and Hanzo go on your first date! Fic is PG-13.
Link for AO3: http://archiveofourown.org/works/10464945/chapters/23570373
Hanzo and Jesse have left it up to you to decide where you’d be going on your first date. Being a person who is no good at making decisions, this was more pressure than actually being asked out on the date itself. You are currently sitting at home in your own apartment watching your phone as the notifications go off one after the other. Being in a group chat with the two of them is a trip:
———————————-
Jesse: where
Jesse: do
Jesse: u
Jesse: wnana
Jesse: go!
Hanzo: Stop spamming.
Hanzo: Let her think, smh.
Jesse: im right here if u wanna fight me
You: IDK
You: I’m really down for whatever!
Hanzo: Where do you like to go during your free time?
You: My room?
Hanzo: -_-
Jesse: im calling u
————————————–
And he does, less than a couple of seconds after you had received that text. You stare at the screen with a shit-eating grin while it’s ringing, and let it go to voice mail.
—————————————
Jesse: answer ya damn phone plz
Hanzo: Don’t cuss at her.
Jesse: answer ya darn* phone plz
Jesse: also fuck u han
Hanzo: Hmmm. Interesting for a person who just asked me to make dinner.
You: Somebodys bout to starve!
You: Also sorry! I had lost my phone very suddenly :/
——————————————
Your phone starts to ring again, and you wait until the last possible moment to answer it. You don’t even have to say a thing; Jesse just starts going off in your ear, “Hey, now listen! I’ma count teh’ three, and when I count teh’ three your’ gonna say the first place that comes to mind alright?”
You let out a long, dramatic, heavy sigh, making sure to blow air into the phone as much as possible.
Jesse laughs, “Alright here we go! One! Two! Three-“
“Zoo.”
“Ah shit, Han! We goin’ to the zoo!”
“No, no, no wait! Let’s try that again!”
Jesse hangs up the phone.
———————————-
Jesse: no take backs
Hanzo: I am excited! I’ve never been to the zoo!
You: We shouldn’t go to the zoo that was stupid
Jesse: nu uh! we going!
Hanzo: Why is it stupid? Now I really want to go!
Jesse: pick u up on friday!!! wear zoo clothes!!!!
You: WTF are zoo clothes
Hanzo: What she said.
Jesse: clothes u wear to the zoo???
Hanzo: Hmmm true.
You: Whatever! Fine! I guess we’re going to the zoo
Jesse: u bet ur ass
Jesse: shit
Jesse: butt*
Hanzo: We’ll pick you up around 9am. Is that okay with you?
You: Pfff yeah.
Jesse: see ya friday!
—————
Friday rolls around, and you guys go to the zoo. It’s the perfect day for it; the sun is out, and it’s partially cloudy. There’s a light cool breeze that feels amazing on the skin. After thinking about it, you’ve actually come around to the spontaneous idea that Jesse had to coax out of you. You guys take your time at each exhibit. The zoo isn’t very crowded at all, and nobody cares that you guys take nearly thirty minutes at each. Hanzo does dramatic readings of the facts on each of the placards, putting on what he likes to call his “tour guide voice”.
When you guys get to the Red Fox enclosure you and Jesse listen while Hanzo reads. At the end, Jesse raises his hand, “Um excuse me, Mr. Shimada? May I ask a question.”
“All questions are welcome, Mr. McCree.”
Jesse points to the cage, “Why are they called Red Foxes?”
You can see Hanzo try and suppress a laugh, and you try to suppress yours as well. Feigning like you, too, would like to know why Red Foxes are named Red Foxes. Hanzo is trying to remain in character, “Mr. McCree, if you can do me a favor and look at the animal?”
“Mhmm, yes.”
“The fox has red fur.”
Jesse places his hand on his chin and nods his head up and down, “Uh huh.”
“So it is called the Red Fox because well; it has red fur.”
You can’t keep up the act anymore. Hanzo says that last line with such conviction and a matter of fact tone that you are doubled over, and clutching your stomach laughing. Jesse refuses to give up the act. He looks down at you, his cowboy hat casting a shadow over his face.
“Darlin’, what’s so funny? I don’t understand.”
Hanzo keeps it up as well, “Sir? The Red fox. Red is a color. The color of the foxes fur is red. Therefore, Red Fox.”
You’re still doubled over wheezing. A small crowd has actually started to stare, thinking that Hanzo is an actual expert and tour guide. They believe that Hanzo, a man who is wearing unbelievably tight joggers and a navy blue tee shirt that says, “Choose Cremation. You Urned it,” is a god damn professional, articulately explaining to a cowboy why a Red Fox is called a Red fox. Jesse sees the curious onlookers and decides that maybe it’s time to end the charade, “Ah, I get it now, and ya’ know what? That’s a pretty dumb fuckin’ fact.”
Jesse throws an arm around your still shaking shoulders, tosses his other one around Hanzo’s, and you guys all walk away from the confused onlookers. Eventually, after marveling at the big cats for nearly an hour, you guys make it into the reptile house. Here is where you figure out that Jesse really doesn’t like spiders and that Hanzo couldn’t care less. You do care a little bit, but the thick plexiglass between you and the arachnids is enough to keep you from being irrational like Jesse is being.
“Can y’all stop puttin’ your faces so damn close to the glass?”
You smile coyly and rest your cheek against the glass, Hanzo follows suit and places his cheek against the glass as well, “Take a picture, Jesse.”
Jesse crosses his arms and pouts, “Y’all think your’ funny huh?”
You grab your phone out of your pocket and turn on the camera, “Guess we’ll just have to take a selfie.”
The spider that is in the little glass case is clinging to the other side, showing off its belly and legs. Perfect for the photo op. You and Hanzo point to it and smile nice and big for the camera, while you hold your phone in your other and snap a photo.
Hanzo says, “Make sure to send that to me in the group chat.”
Jesse is glaring at Hanzo, when you notice one of the workers is trying to get any of the customer to listen to what she has to say about whatever it is she is presenting, but she’s getting no takers. You walk towards her and look into the large, deep, open plexiglass tub that she is standing next to. Your eyes widen and you start to cackle. Oh, this is gonna be good!
“Hey Han! Jesse! Come here!”
You watch closely has they look into the glass enclosure. Hanzo now has the biggest smile, and Jesse takes one glance and literally runs off about twelve feet.
The workers face lights up, “Hello! Would you guys like to hear about this tarantula?”
The look that Hanzo gives her almost looks like he might abandon the two of you and take her out on a date; he is so happy.
“I would absolutely love to hear about this tarantula!”
The woman practically dances, because she is delighted to finally have people who want to listen to her. She clasps her hands together and starts to spew off all of the knowledge she’s got on the spider. Hanzo listens and has questions for her, and she is able to answer everything. Meanwhile, Jesse is in the background huffing and making off-handed comments like, “Interesting” and “Wow, real fascinatin’.” When the spider starts to stretch its legs and move around, you lean in farther to get a better look.
“Hey! Sugar? Maybe don’t do that! That thing is gonna get your face.”
The tarantula handler finally turns her attention to Jesse, “Oh no! Honduran Curly Hairs are docile tarantulas. Also! Tarantulas can’t jump that far. A fall from where her face is at to the bottom would actually seriously hurt the curly.”
Jesse does his best at being polite, “Thanks for the knowledge ma’am.”
At this point, Hanzo is practically inside of the enclosure, and you’ve reached your limit. Any closer, and you’d be pushing your comfort zone. The woman clasps her hands together, “I am so sorry! I haven’t asked for your names yet!”
You both introduce yourselves and take turns shaking her hand, “Hanzo! Seeing as you seem to be the most interested, would you like to hold her?”
Jesse claps his hands together, “Han! You put that spider in your hands, and we are breakin’ up!”
Hanzo puts his hands together, palms up and lowers them into the enclosure; “It’s been nice knowing you, Jesse.”
Jesse is still squirming, but it seems this is something he just has to see. He gets just close enough to be able to look in. He’s standing right behind you, looking over your shoulder, and he’s got two nervous handfuls of the back of your shirt. You reach back and pat his thigh, “There, there. It’ll be alright!”
The woman first coaxes the tarantula into her open palm using what looks to be a soft bristled paint brush. It’s funny watching her gently nudge the brush against the creatures big furry butt. It slowly crawls into her hand, and you can physically feel Jesse tremble. You look back at him, “Jesse, just one of your hands are at least two times bigger than this tarantula is. This tarantula can’t do shit to you.”
“Darlin, I ain’t tryna say you’re not right, but that doesn’t keep the little critter from being real creepy.”
Hanzo isn’t paying any attention to the two of you. He is concentrating on the spider that is now crawling into his welcoming hands. It stays there, cradled, its two front legs feeling along the tips of his fingers. Hanzo is still smiling, “Thank you for letting me hold her.”
The woman continues to light up, “Are you kidding me? You are very welcome. I’m so happy you guys took time out of your day to hang out with me and listen to me ramble about this. Tarantulas are my passion.”
After a couple more tarantula facts, Hanzo places the creature back down into its habitat, and you guys make Jesse very happy by deciding it’s time to move on. The three of you continue to stay close to each other as you visit the rest of the exhibits. When you’ve officially seen them all, you guys go back to gawk at each of your favorites. When hunger strikes, you guys stop at a little cart that specializes in soft tacos. You watch in amazement as Hanzo orders six and downs them all. You guys don’t leave the zoo until you are forced to, because it’s closing time. The three of you leave feeling the good kind of tired, all having found a new favorite place to be.
